This is a bloody disgrace. I have to get cataract surgery and because I dont have residency I will have to get it done in S.E. Asia, mainly because of the cost I think I can get it done for under $1,000. But to keep the OAP waiting 15 years just to be told to go private makes my blood boil...

Another disgraceful game C/L plays with people who apply for DSP, is that they claim a condition which can be relieved by surgery, is discounted due to it being 'temporary'. However, trying to get surgery in this country is damn near impossible, unless you have the money to by-pass public hospitals and pay through the nose for a private one. 103-year-old waits five days for hip surgeryA 103-year-old Sydney woman with a broken hip has been forced to wait for five days on a hospital waiting list and has not been able to eat since Monday lunch. Ina Cameron badly fractured her hip in a fall at her home in Camden in southwest Sydney on Monday, but is not considered a priority for surgery at Campbelltown Hospital, the Daily Telegraph reported. Mrs Cameron has not eaten in nearly five days because her preparation for the operation means she must be "nil by mouth”. Her niece Eva Campbell said the wait was "absolutely disgraceful". "Shouldn't age and fragility be at the top of the priority list?" she said. "I fully accept there are instances where cases are a priority, and you do have to step aside ... but how long does this go on for?" South West Area Health chief Professor Phil Harris said it was Mrs Cameron's general health, specifically stomach ulcers, which prevented surgery taking place. But Mrs Campbell said the opposite message was communicated to her aunt's family. news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8405949/103-year-old-waits-five-days-for-hip-surgery

I know a place in Burma where you can get it done for $13.65. No appointments, no waiting, the guy has a little side-walk operating table. BYO anaesthetic. It must be legit, he says he got his ophthalmologists qualifications in Mumbai.

I had a cataract done in a Government hospital in Sri Rasha about 20Kms north of Pattaya. I don't know why, but I had to check into Hospital on Sunday morning. Had a private room and was served western food. The operation was on Monday afternoon and discharged on Tuesday morning.
Total cost 26,200 baht ( about $850 ) including 2 nights in Hospital.
I need the other eye done now and was going to have it done in Australia. I don't think I can wait for up to 15 years to have it done!!!

Thanks for that I might go to public hospital at Chonburi City or The Navy Hospital in Sattahip... I only have to get one eye done as Cataracts dont grow on plastic eyes, thats why everyone says Im always very one eyed about things. How long ago did you get your eye done in Sri Aracha? I got a price from Rutnin Hospital in Bangkok & they wanted 70,000B for one eye, they say its the top eye hospital in Thailand.

I had the cataract done in October 2010. Also thought about the Naval Hospital in Sattahip but never got there. Before deciding on Sri Rasha I got my Thai girlfriend to ring some of the hospitals in Pattaya.
Bangkok Pattaya International 65,000 to 85,000. Pattaya memorial 50,000 up and also the Rutin Hospital in Bangkok at 70,000.
BTW. spoke to an Englishman last night and he had his eye done on the NHS ( the English Public Health system ). He was on a waiting list for 6 weeks and because the cataract was not bad they charged him 50 pound Stirling. It took all of 15 minutes to do the operation but he was off work for the usual month.

I will contact the Chonburi Gov hospital & get a price, as I have just heard some good reports about them, other wise I might try that one you spoke about. At least I wont have to wait 15 years in Australia.

Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial Hospital (Somdej Hospital) 290 Jermjomphol Road, Sri Racha, Chonburi 20110 Tel. 038-322 157-9, 038-311 298, 038-312 890-2
You must go on a Monday because they book the clinic for the week and being a public hospital have to be there at 7am to register with about 500 Thais, but it only takes about 10 minutes. Once registered, you have to wait till 8am when the eye clinic opens and the doctor starts seeing patients at 9am. Cost for consultation was about 250 baht. If you do not have a car, you can get a baht bus right across the road from the hospital. It goes to the market at Na Kulea for 25 baht.

This is the report I received back from my medical friend about "Savang Vadhana" hospital. " I hadn't heard the name, but looking into it, seems to be a fairly major government hospital. Probably a regional level facility i.e. a referral site for other provinces. I base that on the amount of medical research which seems to take place there. Which also probably means an affiliation with a medical school. All good signs in terms of quality of care. Red tape, especially at initial registration, will be a pain as will waiting times, but costs should be as low as it gets here"
That seems like good news so I will contact them and thanks again for the heads up.

If you've only got the one functioning eye, you might like to somehow find out about their rate of hospital-caused infection and success rate. Cateract ops are very successful these days but jeez Banker....I'd be wary...

Cateract ops are very successful these days but jeez Banker....I'd be wary... Thanks for the thought LD last year they had some bad cases in Thailand with eye infections after cataract surgery, and yes Im very careful because I wont be getting a second chance. Lucky for me I have a close friend that has been working for 25 years in the medical field in Thailand & Cambodia, She is an adviser to the ministry of health and has more degrees than most Doctors, so I take her advice very seriously. After being in SE Asia for 30 years I have made some good local friends, contacts etc.
