After an inquiry regarding Medicare and people staying overseas I got this reply today. Thank you for your email dated 22 February 2012. The Australian Government has signed Reciprocal Health Care Agreements (RHCA) with the Governments of Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Belgium, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, Malta, Italy, Norway and Slovenia which entitles eligible people to limited subsidised health services for medically necessary treatment while visiting Australia. If an Australian citizen has been residing overseas for 5 years or more from date of original departure, they will be asked to show their passport and proof of residency. Proof of residency may be supported by, but not limited to rates notices, a rental contract, employment contract and back statements. Please produce as many documents as possible to support your application. If you return within the 5 years, you will be entitled to be covered by Medicare upon your return. This information can also be viewed on the following link on the Medicare website. www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/public/migrants/visitors/uk.jspIf you have further questions you can call the Medicare public line on 132011. I trust this information will be of assistance. Yours sincerely ***************** Enquiry Resolution Medicare Provider Services
