I used to enjoy a night out in Krung Thep when waiting for my next day domestic to Chiang Rai after flying in from Australia but my enthusiasm (and bank balance) has dimmed a little now. The last half dozen times I've just sat around the airport which isn't too bad, you can get food and coffee all night. This year a mate asked me to look for a cheap hotel near the airport and I came across the Silver Gold Garden Hotel, at $21 a night, booked online. I tried it myself this month, and found it perfectly adequate, clean, aircon, etc with a Tesco Lotus on the doorstep for late night/early morning snacks. There's a free regular shuttle to the airport, and they will pick you up, providing you can arrange it. (I couldn't so I used a taxi which took an hour to find it causing a heated discussion over the fare). www.agoda.com/asia/thailand/bangkok/silver_gold_garden_suvarnabhumi_airport_hotel.htmlI thought it was great value, a few hours sleep and a shower and I could get a later flight home meaning my friend didn't have to get out of bed at the crack of dawn to pick me up.

Fair enough, the reason I mentioned this hotel was that it didn't involve a premium price. If there's a 600B a night hotel around Sukhumvit that's not a total health hazard/fire trap I've never found it and the free shuttle saves 200B+tolls twice over. Also there's no temptation to go out on the town consuming expensive booze and other frivolities.

I'm watching the progress of the SkyTrain that runs out to Swampy, anybody had a run on that yet?

I thought you may be able to connect, I used to stay at the Federal on soi 11 and I wondered if you could get the train at the Nana station at the end of the street and go to the Airport station like that.
