Roxane there are some quite nice inexpensive places about halfway between the airport and the city. I used them back when I had to do a stopover Adelaide/Manila on Singapore Airlines. I seem to recall they were in walking distance of the train. Last I saw they were about $80/night. Have you thought about the YMCA? It's on the end of Orchard Road, very handy... do a Google.

There are some cheap places in Little India. Backpackers there often have single rooms. And it's quite a vibrant (and safe) place at night. GREAT food, too !

Actually, the cheapest and best budget accommodation in Singapore is in Bencoolen Street, quite close to the centre of town. There is a place there called Hawaii Hostel with rooms for about $25 to $30. The rooms are small but have airconditioning, and outside bathroom. Such rooms might cost $40 to $50 in a major Australian city.

The Raffles is the best hotel in Singapore, and although it may be slightly beyond the budget of the overseasDSPer, it is always nice to have an aristocratic cup of tea in the gardens there. There is also a fascinating museum with exhibits from the last 120 years.
