OK Banjo, Its time for you to start the music and put on your dancing shoes. Tribunal backs travel on pension after homeless man won the right to keep his welfare payment A HOMELESS nomad who spends most of the year wandering overseas has won the right to keep his welfare payment after arguing it goes further in South-East Asia than Australia. The 62-year-old's disability pension was initially cancelled in March because he did not have a fixed address in Australia, did not meet residential requirements needed for the payment and spends two-thirds of the year overseas. www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/tribunal-supports-travel-on-pension/story-e6frf7kx-1226546251549

Time the pension system worked AUSTRALIAN manufacturing companies that relocate overseas frequently cite cheaper costs as the primary reason for their move. In the same way, we now have a case where an Australian disability pension has been shifted overseas. It's a remarkable story. A 62-year-old has successfully argued that he be allowed to continue receiving his pension despite spending most of his time in various south Asian countries rather than in Australia. The man, who has been on a disability pension since Bob Hawke's first term as prime minister, claims that his government funding simply goes further in Malaysia or Vietnam than it does at home. Without going too far into the specifics of this individual case, it is worth noting that the man in question receives his disability payments due to the mental disorder schizophrenia. It is interesting, and even encouraging, that he is now able to organise his life so efficiently. Many Australians would baulk at such a complicated travel regimen. More broadly, the man's case illustrates the need for disability pension reform. The option should not exist for disability pensioners to become international tourists. This case indicates that disability pensions are still geared towards permanent payments rather than towards guiding pensioners back into the workforce. The employment options for people placed on disability payments back in 1984 have now expanded immeasurably. The information revolution alone is one area where a huge range of potential employment exists. As The Daily Telegraph has frequently pointed out, disability pensions are the fifth-largest annual budget spending item. We have an excessive number of Australians who are trapped in this system. Some creative thinking is required to free them. www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/opinion/time-the-pension-system-worked/story-e6frezz0-1226546266616

I thought Murdoch was judged to be "unfit" to lead a corporation in the U.K. I thought that the chief editors of News Ltd. there have criminal charges and a court case pending. I believe the Telegraph, Herald Sun and The Australian are News Ltd. rags dedicated to beat up perversions of truth. Furthermore, in this country, they have been behind a concerted effort to remove a government by non-democratic means: smear campaigns, paid for comment low life, vilification and hate crime. Obviously, their readership are mindless bogans and right wingers who are force fed this propanganda swill. If the same papers can beat up the dole payment rate story, the DSP numbers story . . . I suppose attacking some poor guy with schizophrenia is OK.

Yeah well, I always said that we had no chance of any sympathetic approach by the media. It all helps though, as Rowdy pointed out to me in an email this week it becomes part of case law but we need more details... at what level did Centrelink generously decide he could travel? Did the guy win the UP on appeal or has he just had his pension restored by one of the tribunals and told to stay home from now on? Any chance of someone buying a H'un and getting the full story and the name of the writer?
