The change from Unlimited Portability way back to the 13 week rule ? I have been trying to figure when i first moved to the DSP and im pretty sure it was only a matter of 3-6 months after this change happened. Its not on my pension card , that date is an odd one and im not sure what it relates to , but its years after i first moved over. The other reason is i have a friend in Thailand who was on it way before me and believes he has to apply for UP in order to stay there.
If he was on it when the old scheme was in play would he still be eligible for UP under the grandfathering scheme ?

Them as was grandfathered will stay grandfathered unless they choose to return to Australia and become residents again.
The UP came in 1st July last year and the 13 week portability rule changed to 6 weeks on 1st January this year.
On the 1st January last year they tightened up the residency rules, making it harder to travel as regularly as we did in the past.

Thanks Banjo,....but as i thought i didnt make myself clear. What im looking for is the approx time many years ago when the then unlimited portability was changed to the 13 week rule . Or maybe it wasnt unlimited back then but bi yearly returns. Im not sure , but i remember i just missed out on it by a few months. If someone knows when that change occurred then i will know what year i started DSP .
As far as my friend goes,...he had just been going to Thailand since last year, and before that residing in Australia permanently so if he was on the DSP before the the time it changed to the 13 week rule would he still be eligible for grandfathering ?

Yeah, you could have missed out by a day on being grandfathered, that's how unfair it was. I think it was that you had to be out of the country on the 1st July 2004, the day before or the day after missed out.

Hello Carvets, No your friend would not be eligible for grandfathering, since even if he was on DSP prior to 1st July 2004, he was not eligible to be in the group that it was applied to at that time.............and that eligibility ended in July 2004.
