Target of 200,000 more people in employment - Submission to Bill Shorten MP
Thu, 07 Mar 2013, 03:42 PM
Disability Employment Australia is promoting the take up of a national target of 200,000 more people with disability employed in open employment over 10 years.
This target was central to the Disability Employment Australia's submission to Bill Shorten MP's discussion paper, 'Improving the employment participation of people with disability'.
We are recommended a number of initiatives in our submission, importantly:
National target of 200,000 more people with disability employed in open employment over 10 years
Mandatory reporting for businesses with 100+ employees and voluntary targets including the APS and state and local government levels
A national attitude setting campaign
Other key recommendations included:
Although there are encouraging signs of improvement, it is time to challenge the negative perceptions and stereotyping of people with disability by employers;
Gathering data on disability employment is important to fully realise Australia’s obligations under the UNCRPD;
All three levels of Government should lead by example, through recruitment, procurement and contingent labour policies;
Mandatory reporting must be supported by three levels of policies designed to change negative attitudes – individual, organisational and structural levels;
Given that disability is a human rights issue, we support voluntary disclosure;
Government should initiate a disability employment public awareness campaign that explores multiple media channels, especially emergent social media; and
The Disability Employment Services workforce requires capability development and professional standards.
Disability Employment Australia is currently working with a diverse group of stakeholders to address Australia's low performance in employment for people with disability.
