Does anyone else think the procedures you have to go through to be able to live overseas are madness when it would be cheaper for the Australian government to offer an incentive for the disabled and people unable to work to go overseas? I go to the doctors on a weekly basis and am in hospital regularly. Next month I'm having a major operation (under medicare). The public healthcare services disabled and ill people use would be costing quite a lot. In the countries where a lot of us want to relocate to (Thailand, Phillipines) the healthcare services are paid for out of our own pocket but are usually better quality and the doctors seem to be more knowledgable. In addition Centrelink doesn't have to pay rent assistance or any other supplements apart from the base DSP payment. I would think it would make sense to offer people a bonus payment to leave the country.

These points were made in the Senate submissions by DSPoverseas members that resulted in the Indefinite Portability being included in changes to the Social Security Act.

Alright, so apparently I was just stating the obvious then? Well it would be nice if the Senate would follow what is obvious.

Alright, so apparently I was just stating the obvious then? Well it would be nice if the Senate would follow what is obvious. I believe that the current government considers what we have at the moment to be a very generous situation. In 12 months they went from insisting on NO indefinite portability at all to allowing it for those who they rule as having a sever disability and no future work capacity. I've spoken personally with a number of representatives of the government, and for that matter the current opposition, and this is how they think. They consider that we have no further cause for complaint. What we have to show them now is that Centrelink is interpreting the legislation incorrectly, "no future work capacity" must be assessed on more than impairment tables. Until this happens there will still be people who will never get a job under normal circumstances missing out. It is up to you people out there to contact your political representatives, they are sick of the sight of me, I'm a serial pest, it's a bit late to get in now even though promises that will never be kept are flying around anyway. Wait till the new parliament is formed then go and knock on their electoral office doors. Your local federal member and the new Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs ministers would be a good start. Make them look you in the eye and bullshit.

Thank you for doing this, Banjo. When some of us aren't able to do it ourselves, for whatever reasons (physical / psychological / practical etc.) it makes the work you do doubly important. You speak for a lot of us here; thank you for taking our perspective to those in power, and making them listen at least a little.

We have a number of members here that have made a lot of noise in the corridors of power. I think we had three Senate submissions from DSPoverseas and more than a few are well known at their local MPs office.
People are afraid of our political representatives, there's always the underlying suspicion that some sort of retribution would be forthcoming if you publicly campaign against them. I believe that the open media of the Internet has changed all this, unfairness and victimisation very quickly become public knowledge; political reputations can be made or broken on Twitter, Facebook and in the bloggersphere.
