Victoria has never ever seen severe weather. They do indeed live in their own tiny world. Erm....how about the severe weather that comes up from Antarctica ? Or the 1983 dust storm, which was 500 Km long, 100 Km wide and had a height of 3,000 metres ? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Melbourne_dust_storm

now 350 dead and still counting in India. I can remember dust storm in Melbourne. I had a friend who was sitting on a city beach when it arrived. She really thought the world was ending.

You need to do a little research on the Internet, travel as cheaply as you can and find a place you like. Talk to a few like minded people already living there, or join the expat websites and take it from there. What country are you talking about .First of all do your research and then take a tour to the country you intend to go to. Look up the countries ex pat forums .There is a wealth of information there as well. .

Imagine the media frenzy if that happened in Oz let alone the far worse flooding currently going on in many places. I can remember the up roar in Victoria a few years ago on the radio when 3 or 4 houses had 2 inches of water in them. Horror of all horrors. Right now many places under a metre or more of water. In Lovely Nan province the city centre is flooded and more to come. And this was after 40 houses totally destroyed and 8 dead about a month ago in same province. Page 3 or 4 news here. A few years ago I woke up in central Had Yai with over 2 metres of water in the entire city. Eqivalent of Bourke street mall under 2 metres and all the Melbourne CBD. Page 3 here and would have been 10 pages in Melbourne Herald Sun. But of course it could never happen there.

It's passable now but looking at photos online I'd be inclined to still go around. If it rains heavily it will all head off to the Mekong again.

Hi every one, I have been in Australia for the last 9 months and have 6 months to go for my Age Pension. I was told I would have full portability as i had not stayed out side Australia for longer Than a year in my travels to Thailand. I wanted to know if my Pension will be enough to live on or do i need to top it up from my savings. I plan to rent a house in the essan area as its cheap to rent there. Near Khon Kaen. I dont have any house here in Australia but plan to hopefully plan to just live on my pension. Any advise is welcome. Cheers Dave

Cheers Dave You won't have any problems on the oz pension living in that area as long as you are not a heavy drinker or paying for ladies all the time However you will have problems staying in Thailand if your relying on an income letter from the oz embassy which have stopped them. For long term stays at this stage your going to need around 25k oz dollars in a thai bank account

I can live on less than A$100.00 a week once I pay my yearly rent of A$2,000.00 approx. I don't drink much and pay local prices for everything so I save enough for regular holidays also. But not heard about this 25K in Thai account. I hope not true as I'm up for yearly visa in a few months. Can anyone confirm this? There was a rumour we would need all the 800,000 baht in a Thai account but no further info since. Also, I only have a bungalow and not a house. You can get a house where I am for about 3 or 4 hundred dollars a month. An hour ago I got a big cabbage for 40 cents and 2 avocados for A$1.20. So answer is yes easily as pady says.

I was wrong 800 k thai baht is actually over 30 k oz dollars... Even worse Since the oz embassy cut the stat dec this is the only way to stay on a retirement Visa in Thailand for NOW.

dave3478 if you apply for the O-A Retirement Visa in Australia things won't seem too bad re money requirements. It can now only be obtained from the Thai Embassy in Canberra and can be done via the Post. The pros of doing it this way are 1. You have the full amount of pension to rely on; approximately $23,000, therefore if you have $10-12,000 in an OZ account you will have no problems! Twelve months in Thailand, 90 day reports. Once you leave Oz you will however lose approximately $2,500 a year from the pension; loss of supplements. As mentioned above Western Embassies are no longer issuing statutory declarations, affidavits etc. for proof of income. However in the thread in regards to that; the Australian Embassy has told me in a recorded call, they will be able to certify income with a printed Centrelink Income Statement, provided they view the original in your myGov account. As I've said in the thread, will be approaching Thai Immigration in Chiang mai on 5 December to see what the reception will be in regards to that. Although just because one immigration office will accept it doesn't mean others will. This is afterall; Thailand. Cheers bear

Will be awaiting your Chiang Mai visit with bated breath bear. Currently, what do you think will happen when I turn up in Laos with 400,000 in Thai bank and OZ bank statement plus a letter from clink with the pension amount on it as per last 5 years? Also when I was looking at getting one in Melbourne consul general years ago they said i needed a medical certificate saying I didn't have some specific diseases. But never any mention of this in Laos. Also Dave, further to bear saying you have to report to immigration every 90 days; You can either do that or have a multi-entry visa as I have which means I must actually leave the country every 90 days. You can choose either way. As I like to travel it forces me to even if I don't feel like it. Also, I can go out every week and always get 90 days on return. If you get the report visa and wish to go out you must get a re-entry permit. So if you don't want to leave then get the report only visa but if like to travel get the multi-entry one.
