A BLOWOUT in the dole queue will force the Abbott government to target family payments as it cuts the nation's $132 billion welfare bill. The number of Australians on the dole has jumped 20 per cent in a year, to reach 800,587 in October, the latest official data reveals. The global financial crisis has tipped an extra 307,829 Australians onto the dole queue since May 2008. Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he was prepared to "negotiate'' changes to his $5.5 billion a year parental leave scheme, due to start in 2015. The scheme would give new mothers six months' leave on full pay if they earn up to $150,000 a year. But the Greens want to cap the scheme at a $100,000 salary. Mr Abbott opened the door to compromise yesterday, saying the scheme "obviously has to get through the Parliament and that may well involve some negotiation''. He said he was "absolutely committed'' to the disability scheme, but wanted to learn from trials of the program to make it "fair and generous and appropriately targeted''. m.dailytelegraph.com.au/business/economy/dole-blowout-to-force-government-to-target-family-payments/story-fnkjjoum-1226786138630Looks like another election promise bites the dust.
