- We will see how this pans out but it is good to see Shorten is asking the question PRIME Minister Tony Abbott says he stands by all of the coalition's commitments made before the 2013 election. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten asked Mr Abbott in question time whether he stood by his promise not to cut funding to education, health, the ABC, SBS or pensions or change the GST. "If there is one lesson that members opposite should have learned from the experience of the previous term of parliament is you cannot say one thing before an election and do something different afterwards," Mr Abbott told parliament. "If this government says something, it means it. We will keep our commitments." www.theaustralian.com.au/news/latest-news/pm-abbott-stands-by-no-cuts-promise/story-fn3dxiwe-1226826251318

When ABBott said he promised not to cut pensions he must have meant only the aged pension because he said recently it will be left alone while the DSP will be in the firing line in the budget

Everyone under 60, your screwed. www.abc.net.au/news/2014-01-21/federal-govt-says-welfare-system-is-unsustainable/5210006I noticed that he seemed to combine all payments in this paragraph here: "Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews says a new report shows income support payments are now costing the Government $70 billion a year and he is concerned they are becoming unsustainable." DSP costs $15 billion per year. $36 billion per year for Age Pension.

Abbotts already embarrassed by the big rise in unemployment hopefully he will think twice about adding to it by trying to shift people off the DSP onto newstart

I think you are right @frugle and I do think they are and will target under 40's. Because our pensions are on the same line in the Constitution as OAP they cannot reduce our Pension without reducing the OAP. But of course 'they' will try to move as many folk off DSP as they possibly can, even if it pumps up the unemployment numbers. Sickness Allowance will be a growth segment for prospective and ex DSP recipients because it is a little reported number at the moment.

"Prime Minister Tony Abbott has no plans to sign off on changes to the disability support pension even though the $15 billion-a-year payment has been targeted for cuts by two of his senior ministers"
Its also how the reporter has interpreted it as well
