I've got a o/s trip coming up and need to buy some ringgit here in Melbourne. Where's the best deal from you guys expirence? I usually just go to harvery world travel kiosh at my local shopping strip. I've heard airports are the worst place to change currency, are ordering online from any Australian banks or is it all a case of much of a muchness lol

Best way is change $50 at the destination airport and then head to a local bank there

Ask at the big banks, the main branches in town if they have any.
Why not just withdraw it at the Malaysian airport at the ATM or change dollars at the exchange there? The rates might not be real good but just get enough to tide you over until you get the chance to change some in the city.

Yeah I know it isn't a huge issue I've always been a bit paranoid that the banks super computer's might go offline while i'm away and i'm stuck without cash it's never happened to me but every so often oz banks have issue's

I agree with zorro1 and Banjo. Not sure for Malaysia but the Exchange desk at Manila Airport give you fairly close to official exchange rates and I take enough Australian $'s with me to cover what I will reasonably need in the short term. You can check out the exchange rates the banks will give you on their websites.. for example the ANZ is at www.anz.com/aus/RateFee/fxrates/fxpopup.asp and the rate you want is the sell rate. Plus there is a fee. They are never worth it. I have checked the exchange rate at a Travel-Ex kiosk both in Cairns City and at Darwin Airport, and admittedly for Philippine pesos, and they were never worth it.
