Labor Party to launch own news service
Frustrated with the coverage it has received in the "mainstream media". the Labor Party has decided to start its own news service.
In an email to Labor members, national secretary George Wright said he understood frustrations that the "Labor message isn't making it through the mainstream media".
"We have to produce our own news service," Mr Wright said, adding that the public deserved "more factual information about what Tony Abbott and his government are doing".
"I believe it’s really important that we do this," Mr Wright said. "We need our own news and we need a place where we can hear each other’s views.
"It’s going to cost us around $95,000 year to find the right person for this, hopefully a news journalist with experience online."
Mr Wright, like former prime minister Kevin Rudd, was frustrated with the constant attacks on Labor in the election campaign by the mainstream press, and News Corp in particular.
The idea met instant mockery online, with people on social media suggesting names of possible journalists to perform rounds at the news service, which will be called the Labor Herald.
Former NSW powerbroker Eddie Obeid was suggested by several Twitter users as the news service's commercial property expert. Former foreign minister Bob Carr, whose recent diaries included complaints about airline food and lack of pyjamas, was suggested as a travel writer and corrupt former NSW minister Ian Macdonald was floated as a food and wine writer.
"The catch," Mr Wright wrote in his email, "is we don’t get the big corporate donations the Liberal Party gets and we need to hire someone experienced as an editor so we can do this properly.
"To get this off the ground we only need about 350 people to sign up to donate $22.60 a month."
"I know not everyone can afford that, but if you can chip in $10 or $15 that will help too, and if you can spare a little more, maybe $30 or $40, that will make up the difference.
The job of the Labor Herald's pioneering journalist would be to "write useful, interesting articles for the site on issues like cuts to pensions and the Commission of Audit."
Mr Wright said the Labor Herald would involve a daily news bulletin which would be dispatched to all who sign up.
"There will be handy facts, interesting articles and video," he said. "It will be no nonsense and it won’t be filtered through the mainstream media.
