Whether portability is 4 or 6 weeks really makes little difference. UP is there for those that can't work. There should be a push to make the requirements clear. As Banjo HSS always said, it shouldn't just be about the impairment tables but all factors considered.

There's a story in the news, frugle has posted it in the "Audit Day" thread.

They finally stop lying about savings and come straight out with "we just don't want you traveling, we don't need a reason".

to banjo,so when does the 4 week ruling start? Its got to be passed by Parliament first. Mid 2015 would be a likely start. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

We went overseas last year for almost six weeks to the UK. By the time we had saved enough one older relative had already died, another died while we were there so we spent time organising the funeral etc. the last remaining relative was in shock and we had to try to work our way thru the UK support system for her. (They were/are all around 90).
My husband is disabled and it took the whole first week for him to recover enough from the trip to be able to leave the house. I kept a diary and five out of seven days I wrote he was unwell.
Four weeks would not have been enough time for us, when a person is disabled everything takes just so much longer. How sad our country is bashing those who don't deserve it.

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk Didn't Swan reduce it from 13 weeks to 6 by including it in the budget announcement? It then came into force at the beginning of the next year.

There's been no talk of it, if I was forced into a guess I'd say that they will leave UP alone. They will reduce DSP travel by cutting the portability and reduce DSP numbers with the ALP's assessment tables mainly through failing new applications. There's been no talk of how mass re-assessments will increase unemployment figures, traditionally a high dole count has been political suicide which is why John Howard made the DSP easier in the first place. Wait until Tuesday.

From 1 January 2013 generally all payments are portable for up to 6 weeks (for most payments, only for temporary absences). Specific conditions must be met for some payments.
The 6 week portability period is subject to continuing qualification for the payment and nothing in the portability rules confers a right on a recipient to continue to be paid if the recipient is not qualified for the payment (section 1212D). This means that qualification for the payment overrides any portability provisions.
Act reference: SSAct section 1212D Part does not affect need for qualification

Well It Looks grim !
Seems the Govt has the plan .... re valuate younger ( under 35s ) DSP pensioners to have them work , and move them to lower newstart payments ,indexing to decrease the DSP , portability to be cut for all DSP pensioners to 4 weeks overseas travel at a time .. Have a contact at Centrelink whom has advised me , ( some intel from senior sources ) its a witch hunt , to stop younger work able recipients from surfing and living in Bali , if they actually exist ? I say fair enough and correctly so and then older long term folks currently living in Greece and Turkey whom are waiting to qualify for the aged pension with indefinite overseas residency. Then there's this unjust and politically incorrect suggestion ..also there are older folks and some singles living in South East Asia ... Laos , Cambodia , Thailand and the Philippines , etc whom may not be able to work or obtain work in Australia competitively and wish to retire there eventually that currently receive DSP ?
OF THE 800000 FOLKS CURRENTLY ON DSP ONLY 473 FALL INTO THE LAST CATEGORY !
The government has to know that allowing the latter group to reside overseas actually saves them more money due to no medical costs etc . An inside word from someone at Centrelink ... There may be a suggestion if you are an older recipient on the DSP and wish to go onto IP overseas you maybe can do so with a reduced pension payment ?
What is very evident is The Libs are making it more difficult for the lower income and poorer Aussies and want to punish anyone receiving welfare who doesn't live permanently in Australia
