Welcome, you came to the right place! If you've been on DSP since 2012 than you've been accessed under the new table, and since you are over 35 so you might be safe for now. But people here have lots of experience so if you have specific queries or issues we'll help you

Hi Roxane, I might be looking into this unlimited portability as an option because I am looking at one day going overseas to stay with a girlfriend in Canada. I think am assessed as having zero work capacity at the moment but not exactly sure what to look at or where to go from here.

Maybe you can call Centrelink International and make an enquiry about applying for Unlimited Portability.
If you have zero work capacity then you may qualify.
At least with UP you will have more freedom to travel plus financial support via the DSP.
Good luck!

hey, thats what my psychiatrist says i have, i know i got a severe disability rating, but frankly im too scared to ask him about travelling overseas at the moment because he keeps talking about clozopine, and i think you get registered on a special clozapine database, and then you have to go in every week for blood testing and stuff. i dont want him using putting me on clozopine as a way for him to keep me in the country. so im trying to get to a point where my solian is reduced, cause its on the maximum at the moment, then ill bring up travelling overseas to him. Cause they can make you involuntary, and i think that makes it alot harder to leave the country. im currently voluntary. but for unlimited portability you will need 20 point severe impairment in 1 category and 0-7 hour work capacity and you pdoc to say you wont improve to the point of being able to work in the next 5 years.

i had to go to the mental health hospital today actually, its brutal if they make you involuntary. the involuntary is on the second floor as you walk up the hill to the reception and voluntary section on first floor. Theres always someone yelling at you through the iron gates they have for help. like they are in jail, clozopine is the last resort medication before electric shock therapy, which apparantly isnt as bad as it used to be because you are unconscious, but it scares the hell out of me. so im just trying to be as chilled as possible lately. then theres the guy involuntary guy who walked past me when i was outside having a cigarrette, who was outside having a ciggie too, who was talking to noone in these kind of rhymes, and then when walked past me, but still talking to himself says, "people are trying to kill me, thats ok, ill kill them.", settle down mate.

Discontented......Maybe your girlfriend will be willing to help with daily care for you, If so, then you might have a good reason to need to travel to Canada.
If there's no one here to help with your daily needs, then surely it would be better that you travel to Canada to be with your girlfriend.
Cheers!!!

Welcome to the forum discontented. There are a list of freecall numbers for Centrelink international if you are overseas. www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/contact-us/international-phone-numbersYou can ask them to send out the forms for Unlimited Portability if you feel you are ready but if you want to wait and talk to your health professional first stress that you do NOT want the forms yet but are just making inquiries. Remember that whoever you talk to will not be able to advise you whether or not to apply, they are just office workers.

Hi all, I am 36 and I got on DSP back in 2012. I joined because all of the political happenings have me a bit worried about my situation being reviewed and possibly being forced back to newstart/looking for work. So I seeking answers and support & was referred to this site by friend. Welcome to the forum. They seem to be only targeting under 35's at the moment. That McClure report said they might target some people in the mental illness category and some other groups they somehow consider to have a non-permanent disability and people who they consider to have partial work capacity onto newstart. l think they release more details of what they have planned with the McClure report in October. On the welfare rights website they said they don't think the McClure report will be implemented until a few years. Hopefully they are correct then there might be nothing to worry about for a few years , especially if the liberals lose the next election. This is what welfare rights said about the McClure report: www.welfarerights.org.au/news/2014/7/17/factsheet-2014-budget-changes-dsp"What about the McClure Welfare Reform Interim Report and talk of the DSP only for people with a “permanent” disability? Over the past few months the Government have employed a group of people to review the welfare and income support system in Australia. The group released an Interim Report on June 29 that suggested restricting the Disability Support Pension for those whose disability was “permanent”. People whose disability was seen as “temporary” or “episodic” might be paid a different or lower payment. This change is only a suggestion at this point, and if it was accepted, it would not occur in the next few years. None of the details are clear. For example we don’t know whether the changes would be applied to people currently on the DSP, or whether it would just apply to people claiming payments sometime in the future."

Welcome to the forum discontented.
If you have schizophrenia as the thread name implies, it is one of the mental illnesses C/L tend to regard seriously. Bipolar is another.
I think they are thinking more along the lines of "anxiety & depression" type illnesses more as being episodic.
As you should already be aware "psychotic" type illnesses are a lifelong disease and medication doesn't stop the weird thought patterns but makes them manageable most of the time. Talk it through with your health professionals re UP, try not to stress too much and all the best of luck.
Cheers bear

Thanks Bear, I'll talk with my health professional about UP. Kimmy: That's good idea because I don't have much in the way of care at the moment since my social worker went on extended sick leave I'm forced to do with the "temporary" replacement who's schedule is quite busy at the the moment.
It was a real struggle to get on DSP as is, I went 4 years on newstart trying to get all the documents needed while having to jump through the silly centrelink hoops, I am managing better now but the thought of having to go back to the same dramas scares me.
Thanks for the link frugle, i'll check it out.
