Great news, everybody. I've been granted a Section 24 for six months, to be reviewed after that time. I don't expect my situation to change before I die. People here speak of Centrelink checks overseas, but they may not be the real risk. How many of you have friends or family back in Australia? It only needs one of them to say the wrong thing, or even become angry enough to dob you in. If that happened you could be far worse off, even extradited back to Australia to stand trial, just to make an example of you. Another aspect today disturbed me. it's not enough to prove your partner has nothing to add, the onus is on the recipient to prove the need. Now, how many pensioners are living the good life because they are not in Australia? Obviously, we all are. I've been looking at the history of the Old Age Pension, and it's to allow the elderly to have security, not extravagance. Turnbull and Morrison could easily start looking at all of us to see if we really need the amount of money we are being paid. Australian consular officials could readily provide cost of living reports to Canberra. For Asia, the only only thing we don't have is cheap medicine. In the Philippines it's literally "Your money for your life". Some years ago I attended a government hospital in Davao City with a scalp would requiring 5 stitches. A Filipino came in with blood down the front of him, the result of a traffic accident. Because the money was not put down a possible life saving X-ray was not taken. Without going into all the detail, suffice to say the relatively young man died in the cubicle. He had suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage, but was in the cubicle more than an hour before he died. Sadly, it's a case of "No money? Send your relative out to get a box, and dig your grave."

Fantastic news George, commonsense has prevailed.
I doubt the government will introduce tiered pensions for overseas residents, we already lose things like allowances and the pension supplement.

And Medicare, but we both know the pension system in its current format is costly, and we could make easy targets. Like you, I hope it does not happen.
if they ask about food expense we can always say we like Australian imported lamb, Californian grapes, and pears. These are available in nearby (32 KM) Davao City, and are considerably more expensive than local beef, pork, and local fruit.
Yes, it's good that common sense still has a place, and is still alive. I did hear where someone held a requiem mass, and a mock burial for "Common Sense".

Medicare is a bit strange, if you lose it on residency grounds you can apply to have it reinstated when you return to Australia. If you return regularly then you may not lose it at all.

We have had some type of 'flu' go through the village here. Knocks the old folk around, including me. Good on you for looking out for them. ....flu is a serious illness. I've been looking into my family history and my grandfather's grandmother died in a small town near where I live, so very recently when I was in the area, I visited her grave. I discovered that that she died at the age of 48 and one of her daughters was buried next to her..... it is a double grave. She died 3 weeks after her mother at age 24. After a while I remembered that there was a flu epidemic in 1890/91....the year they died. The other thing that convinced me was that they died on August 1 and August 21......peak flu season here. And Ipswich is a cold town in Winter. This shocked me a bit...I had never heard why or how the mother died, nor anything about the daughter. But I'm sure my deduction is correct.

I'd need to see some sort of proof other than hearsay from the paranoid. when I lived overseas I was the target of three centrelink investigations trying to ascertain whether I was employed or receiving a cash based income. Private investigators were utilized. It's all in my centrelink file. The conclusion was a was volunteering my time for my partners business.

And that is after WW1.

What do you mean volunteering? working for free is still working. I would have thought if you could volunteer it would be considered that you could work. They must have thought the same.

The investigation was regarding having an income. Volunteering doesn't pay.

I don`t believe these thieves. just checked my centrelink account and it says next pay on 5th December is $347. They have got to be kidding. I am on OAP for nearly 3 years and living in Philippines and they decide to rob me of $500. This is bs so have sent off 2 emails complaining but i bet i will have to ring them tomorrow to get it sorted. This is not acceptable.

I never believe what my Centrelink account says my next pay will be. An officer even told me not to take it seriously. The only true source is the bank account. Just checked, cannot even access the log on page. No news is good news.
