For what it is worth I'll be lobbing into Hong Kong about 9am Monday 22 August 2016.
If anyone happens to bypass be glad to catch up for coffee.
I have to go into the city and leaving the next AM.

I'll be there, but sadly not until October on my way to a China adventure!

Just a comment for those that want or need to know.
I went to Hong Kong and returned.
I think the Chinese gubmint are, slowly but surely, making sure that anything to do with the British will be erased by virtue of the predominance of Chinese language notifications with a secondary tag for English language.
It is extraordinary to land at HK airport and then venture onto Hong Kong island.
The scale of development, namely the amount of construction, is nearly unbelievable to anyone that has measured Australian economic activity by the number of high rise cranes in operation in Capital cities.
And once again, it emphasized for me what utter crap is coming out of our so called parliaments about 'jobs and growth'.
Anyway, that's my first.
I wouldn't live in Hong Kong.

Other than a few hours at the airport enroute to Bangkok with Cathay Pacific I've not been to HK for more than ten years now. I always liked it though, it's probably my favourite Asian capital, the food is fantastic and the shopping is at another level if you're that way inclined. Retiring there would be another thing, plenty to see and do and I suppose it would be cheap enough but it would be hard to get away from the full on big city lifestyle.

I was about the same BanjoThe first time, ever, that I ventured in. Bloody expensive as well. I only went to the main island. Amazing to see car repair type places in the back streets behind "the big banks". And they are fixing Audis and Mercs! Another thing. It is mainly double decker buses. Better than the hi- speed train because you can see 'things'. If I ever go again I'd probably go to Kowloon.

Yes, I much preferred Kowloon, the further north you go the less touristy it becomes. I stayed up at Mongkok once, all the best markets are up there and you pay mainly Chinese prices. I used to have a gargle back then and there lots of nice little beer drinking places where you were virtually on the street and could watch the great flow of humanity go by.

For me HK is just a 3 hour flight away but by the time you go through all the stuffing about both outward and inward I may as well have flown to Darwin. But to do that, Darwin, I would have flown from Cebu to Manilla. In one way I envy you folk that have land borders. Cheers D

I'm thinking of doing an overland trip via Hong Kong to watch Port Adelaide play their AFL match in Shanghai next year. Maybe a couple of short local flights included. Should be cheap with plenty of breaks to stretch and recuperate.

For me it is quite amazing to think of Aussie Rules being played in so many countries even where soccer is King. www.afl.com.au/global

Could be the new thing in China, prior to soccer becoming popular there a big day out was the public executions.
