They are in the woodwork everywhere lol lol.. I don't doubt that. I was just amazed that an Australian Government department would go to Chiang Mai! They say they have telephone connection to the Philippines but it is only PLDT that you can call on. They ignore Globe. I'd be careful about Chiang Mai.

When they started the consular services a year or so back they made it very plain that it would have to pay for itself or it wouldn't last. Seeing as they have increased the visits it appears to have been a success. It was quite crowded the time I used it.
I also wrote to the department thanking them for the service and advised others to do so.

Chiang Mai is hardly rural, anymore than Adelaide or Brisbane could be described that way because of their distance from Canberra in Australia. Most major cities anywhere have consulates in larger population centers outside the capital, Australia has one in Chiang Mai and Phuket in Thailand. Both cities have large populations of Australian expats where as in the Philippines I would suggest that a the majority would live on southern and central Luzon, most reasonably close to the embassy in Manila.
I've spent time in the Philippines and traveled through much of the country and never saw anywhere near the expat communities in places like Cebu City, Zamboanga or Dumaguete that you would find in similar population centers in Thailand.

Hi Denis
There is talk that Chiang Mai used to be the first major city in Thailand I have actually been to the original site where the old city started from I was lucky to be taken by one of my Thai friends As I wanted to see something different from the normal tourists sights
Just a few facts to continue on from Banjo These facts are general but many people come to live here because its reasonably cheap. Plus many can not afford to live in there own countrys Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second largest city, after Bangkok It is located 700Km North of Bangkok Has a population of around 1.6 million with over 350,000 people living inside the city centre Chiang Mai receives around 4 million foreign visitors and 9 million Thais a year There are estimated to be over 20,000 expats living here
As you can see i do not live in a Hick Town Thats why i chose it after coming here for 6 1/2 years as a tourist
We can not compare each country because they are all different as the Philippines has it major population in there citys but a lot in there islands
