I've just spent few days in the northern city of Mandalay and a couple of members had asked me about the possibility of living in the country. While it's a nice place with exceptionally friendly people and local food/market prices well down there appears to be no visa tailored for retirees.
Work and business permits and tourist visas only. Are far as westerners go I saw few tourists and fewer expats, the locals did not appear to know of any retirees living there.
Getting around was difficult, infrastructure like footpaths and roads generally poor and the traffic insane. Not a lot of English speakers either. I speak some Thai and a little Lao but neither language was understood.
I'll post some photos when I download my camera, still in recovery mode.

My friends drank the beer without complaint so I suppose it was OK. Like all countries of the region the accommodation would be along the lines of "you get what you pay for". I stayed in a hotel that was expensive for me but worth every cent in comfort and service. Doesn't hurt for a few days once in a while.

Sorry Banjo, If my post seems obscure it is because, at least on my computer/internet connection, you made 5 blank posts that I assumed may have been photos.

OK. try another browser like chrome or IE if you use firefox, I had a bit of trouble loading them as well. I see them fine with windows 7 and Firefox. Must be my internet. I run win7 and firefox also. Chrome shows me a small picture icon but I can't save it or do anything with it and IE (latest updated version) only shows a small box with an X in it. I'll check it out through Tor later, and one other I have. We in the Phils have a 'strange' internet setup in that PLDT and Globe will not talk to each other so only 'The Gods' know what happens sometimes in cyber space. At least I got it correct that they were photographs and I, like the bangalorebiker, am also interested in Burma. Given your understanding of Thai and Lao how would you, if possible, describe the Burmese language? And PS. If anyone wants conspiracy type stuff my internet went down for about 3 minutes after I tried to originally access the photos. LOL

Burmese is closer to the languages of Eastern and Central India, then you have the ethnic minorities, some of which are in the Tai group which contains Shan, Thai and Lao.
I always look at the numbers, as you go east, they become similar to Thai but I did not recognise a single number in Burmese.
If you check like that in the Central Philippines tongues you may see a resemblance between the Vasayan dialects and Cebuan etc. I also saw elements of Spanish and Bahasa there as you went south.

Another odd one also Banjo. Was just looking at those on line in last 24 hours and saw one i'd never seen before. chillout. So clicked on it and said they registered in 2011 at 111 years of age. born Jan 1 1900. so now 116 years old but no posts since 2011. Yes, killing time as too early for my one Sat night beer. But now time. Cheers.
