Dear Members
I am planning to go O/S for a while. I'm currently on several medications and in OZ get supplied through the PBS.
I can only take 6 months of medications with me.
Where have other members found it cheaper to buy medication ? I will be staying in Thailand.
Thanks Daniel

It depends on what you want and where you shop. I've found that medications can be twice as expensive in up market Mall pharmacists as the little guys in the street. A good idea is to ask your doctor or pharmacist for the names of alternatives to what is prescribed as well.
You have 6 months to look around if you stock up on leaving, I have a list of what's available here somewhere so I'll have a look later.

Some things are only available at the hospital pharmacies, I suspect a consultation with a doctor maybe involved as well.

I would ask my Doc for a new prescription mentioning the brand name and the generic name. He will probably advise you to stick with the branded. But you might try the generic brand for comparison. Even the higher cost should be manageable because you are living in Thailand. And as you say you will not be paying your ticket home if you stay.

Thanks everyone
I've looked for my medications before in Chiang mai and 2 were only available at the hospital. 2 more were available at the pharmacy.
I was thinking about getting them mail order, but unsure of rules in LOS.
I have generic names and an international license.
Many thanks Dan

As i return yearly i get 6 months worth and then a family member gets ca script for me and posts them to me. My tabs for cholesterol only are up to 10 times more expensive for the exact ones but i havn't looked into generic as i havn't needed to. Anything that is imported into Thailand costs heaps more than locally produced stuff. One example is Psyllium husks which were $9.00 in Australia and when I saw them in Chiang Mai i got all excited until it was $75.00 for the same quantity.

Nomadic Many thanks,I will look into doing something similar. I can't remember the exact price of my medications in LOS, but they were expensive.
Cholesterol and blood pressure medication only, I couldn't see any problems with having them posted.

Buying them online shouldn't be a problem.

Along with your 6 month PBS supply, you can also take more medications you have purchased at full cost. According to an Australian chemist.

I'd be seeing my doctor and asking him for a list of alternatives to what you're taking. Even google the active ingredient names yourself and make a copy of the various brand names, it's often sold in different countries by different companies.

You can register yourself with mims.com that provide generic and branded pharmaceutical drug information for Australia and SE Asian countries. see policy.mims.com/In the Philippines I have found it quite handy to translate an Australian drug name to a locally sourced one and often times the local supplier will give suggested retail pricing along with packaging. They definitely cover Thailand, www.mims.com/thailandand Australia www.mims.com.au/
