The death this year of our member and regular contributor should show anyone living outside of Australia and intending to apply for the Age Pension to do it NOW.
Chris joined this forum nearly 4 years ago, talking about going back then, he was still putting it off (last "departure" date was Nov 2016)now he's dead and his wife and very young children must rely on his extended family for support.
I urge anyone of pension age to get it organised now, the rules may be wrong on portability but it's what we have to work with at the moment.

Ok...I see now that it was not. I missed the original thread about this tragic news.
Really heartbreaking to see his happy kids on Facebook....I feel horrible now.

Yes, he kept putting it off, putting off coming back to Australia to do a depressing 2 year detention, away from his family, in order to obtain an Australian Old Age Pension that was fully portable overseas. Apparently, from what he mentioned, he was living on a small welfare payment from the United States, and his dwindling savings. It makes you think about what is important in life.... is it better to live on a smaller amount of money, but surrounded by the love of his family, wife and kids, in a Tropical Paradise.......or is it better to serve a possibly unhappy 2 year detention in Australia, away from his family, in order to obtain the Australian Old Age Pension. I'm not sure, whether his family is eligible for any support from the Australian government, regardless of whether he was on the OAP or not. Does anyone know?
