Aussies: Meet your new Hon. Consul Ron Elliott at Embassy Outreach, Feb 3

The Australian Government has appointed CEC member Ronald Elliott as its new Honorary Consul resident in Chiang Mai to serve the provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Mae Hong Son, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Sukhothai and Tak.
Prior to moving to Chiang Mai in 2014, Ron was a senior executive with 45 years of experience in policing, critical infrastructure protection and airport security. Ron is a dual Australian/Canadian citizen with extensive experience working with government organisations in Australia and Canada.
Nearly nine hundred thousand Australians visit Thailand every year with a large number resident in northern Thailand. Ron's appointment will help the Australian Government to continue delivering high quality consular services to Australians in Chiang Mai and neighbouring provinces.
Ron replaces Michael Walther, who provided outstanding service to Australia and its people during his tenure as Honorary Consul in Chiang Mai since 2004.
In an email interview with the CEC e-newsletter, Ron says many have asked exactly what it is an Honorary Consul does. He provides these details:
▪ Providing consular assistance in a sensitive manner to Australians in relation to their welfare, arrest, whereabouts, death, imprisonment, repatriation, hospitalization, or evacuation and providing passport applications.
▪ Maintaining good relations with the Thai government and local authorities relevant to Australia’s consular and other interests.
▪ Assisting the Embassy in relation to Australian commercial, cultural, educational, scientific and technological interests in the consular district as required.
▪ Building general public awareness of Australia through dissemination of information.
▪ Engaging in ceremonial and public affairs activities as a representative of Australia.
▪ Acting as a communication channel between the Australian Embassy, Bangkok and the Thai government in the consular district, when requested.
▪ Supporting visiting Australian officials (such as during the Embassy Outreach visits) and performing other duties as requested by the Australian Embassy, Bangkok,
▪ Participate in the activities of the international Consular Corps in Chiang Mai.
And, here is what he CANNOT do:
* Notarial services such as witnessing or certifying documents, issuing statutory declarations for visa extension, income verification letter, residence certificates, marriage documents, etc.
* Accepting or processing Passport, Visa or Australian Citizenship applications
* Registering a marriage in Thailand
These functions are performed by the Australian Embassy in Bangkok or during their Consular Outreach visits in Chiang Mai. The next one is scheduled on Friday, 3 February, 9am - 12pm; 1 - 3 pm, Le Méridien Hotel.
