Just a heads up that the American, Australian and NZ embassies are warning ex-pats that Abu Sayyef are scouting the Visayas area for potential kidnap victims. The local authorities seem to be onto it as there was some fighting on Bohol Island yesterday morning and boats were sighted off the island of Cebu a tad North of where I am in Argao. Scuttlebutt is saying they are heading down to Dumaguete. I'm safe as I have my 'viscous' Shih Tzu and another kelpie like dog.

An attack Shih Tzu will strike fear into their hearts.
These warnings are commonplace and world wide lately, let commonsense prevail, keep a low profile and avoid areas where conflict is going on. Maintaining a good relationship with the locals is important as well.
I still believe it's more dangerous for the likes of us in the nightlife areas of Melbourne and Sydney.

I Agree, I got multiple bashings in Sydney when I was living on the streets there. On one occasion I was almost kicked to death by a gang of Vietnamese in Sydney's south west. I received a number of head injuries in that attack.
In contrast, my time in Asia/Philippines has been peaceful. No one has ever assaulted me there. I guess there is a greater chance of being shot in the Philippines, but as long as you are respectful to locals and know when to back down it is an unlikely event. Also I normally have someone looking out for me there and of course I am not sleeping on the street when I am in the Philippines. When you consider my differing lifestyle in the two places I feel just as safe in Manila as I do in Sydney.

My Shih Tzu is totally white. What gets me is that he can hardly see over a grasshopper but he barks when anyone stops out the front. And he's not frightened of anything but the poor little bloke has a broken leg at the moment. As Banjo says basically, be aware. And you are right. I find it much safer here in the Philippines than I do in lots of places in Australia
