Just watched The ABC's Drum program.
The entire panel was talking up Anthony Albanese and one was even talking down Bill Shorten.
Anthony Albanese calls for twin January 26 referendums(The Australian), Bill Shorten has not backed Albo on his call.
Richard Marles has switched from the right faction(Shorten) to back Albo's independent stance on the matter. He's probably hoping to be deputy leader.
Anthony Albanese's mum was on the DSP.
The odds for the next ALP leader are Albo $1.75
What does this mean for Dsp's?

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese wants a dual referendum to settle the heated Australia Day debate.Mr Albanese has called for a twin referendum to be held on January 26 next year, wanting the public to vote on whether Australia should be a Republic and whether Indigenous Australians should be recognised in the constitution. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Australia Day "Not until 1935 did all the Australian states and territories use that name to mark that date. Not until 1994 did they begin to celebrate Australia Day consistently as a public holiday on that date." www.australiaday.com.au/about/history-of-australia-day/1770 - Captain James Cook raised the Union Jack on what is now called Possession Island on 22 August to claim the eastern half of the continent as New South Wales for Great Britain. 1778 - The First Fleet reach Botany Bay 20 January. Captain Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet of eleven convict ships from Great Britain, and the first Governor of New South Wales, arrived at Sydney Cove on 26 January and raised the Union Jack to signal the beginning of the colony. Change the date. It was only arbitrary in the first place. It's not going to change that the British came or what happened afterwards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The referendum for a Republic should be for which Model of Republic we want to have. Otherwise it's going to be a death by a thousand cuts. This is the way is should go. Referendum - Which model for our Republic. Vote - Do you want to become a Republic under the model chosen. Otherwise you'll have: Referendum - Do you want to be a Republic Vote - Which Model should we have But wait , I hate all of these Models and don't want to be a Republic under any of them Oh really, too bad, that's the choices you've got and we've had a Referendum so we have to become Republic.

Can't see it, Shorten almost knocked off the Libs who were holding a large majority in the last election, it would be self destructive to change leaders now. But then we are talking about the ALP.

l just want the liberals to lose the next election,No doubt if the liberals are in Power for years more they would continue to push harsh welfare reforms and expansion of the welfare card. l'm worried if theres leadership troubles between Albanese and Shorten before the election it could cost labor the election . Just because albaneses mum was on the DSP doesn't necessarily mean he would or could make things better for DSP's .

Unnecessary speculation on ALP leadership. The Libs are the ones we want gone the most. I am prepared to give Shorten a chance even though I likely will still give Greens my first preference. Only way we can continue to be heard is contacting ALP mps on issues affecting us regardless of concerns of being brushed off. The Libs being in power is not just a concern for me with welfare but dangerous for other areas too. They are just proven to be incompetent at running the country and have never been fair.
I feel Labor's team now is better than it was back under Gillard. That era where DSP and Single Parents got screwed over is one to never forget but I'd like to give Bill the benefit of the doubt at least given he at least is of significant Union background.

He cannot challenge for leadership until after an election. Rudd made changes to that in 2013. The changes mean a Labor leader would be elected by 50 per cent of MPs and 50 per cent of rank and file members. The caucus has also ratified a move that will see the support of 75 per cent of caucus being required to force a ballot against a sitting prime minister, which drops to 60 per cent for a Labor opposition leader. He can still challenge, but not in a direct way.

Tbph I used to think he should challenge but not so much now. Its not the leader we elect but the party and policies. ALP self destructed in their previous gov but to Shorten's credit he has pulled them from the brink to near gov in 2016 having had the Libs a larger majority. I don't want ALP to have leadership challenges now.

Even if Albanese is us DSP's best friend l don't want him challenging before the election as all that will do is cost Labor the election, people will just think labor is the same divided joke as it was under rudd, Gillard years and they will lose the election, if Albanese wants to challenge he should wait and keep his mouth shut until after the election, otherwise he is a stupid idiot and just doing what the liberals want and condemn us to years and years of the liberals harsh welfare reforms, we will probably all end up having our DSP controlled by the liberals corporate mates INDUE corporation on their welfare card.

Please never forget. Every politician on earth is a self serving ego maniac. They will only ever do things to get elected and never for the benefit of the world at large. I recently heard a quote from Keating told by one of his ex ministers. "I will say anything i need to say to be elected". He was once my political hero. Again i was so far wrong. They are all rotten just some are not as rotten as others. My contacts with Shorten when he was disabilities minister can only be described as dealing with Satan's deputy.

Federal ALP changes
Following his return to the leadership of the Australian Labor Party in 2013, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd sought changes to the party's rules so that leadership spills would be more difficult to launch in future. This includes the requirement for 75% support within the Australian Labor Party Caucus for a special leadership ballot against a sitting Labor prime minister, or 60% against an opposition leader.[11] The changes, which also provided for equally weighted voting rights between the caucus and party rank and file members in future leadership ballots, were subsequently adopted by Labor.[12]

I am impressed that Shorten has just pledged a federal ICAC. I am of course wary on pledges but if he goes through with this watchdog that cracks down on every corrupt pollie I'll be very pleased. The corruption includes handling of centrelink.

Nothing will change with any of the mongrul politicians, they are only there for what they can get out of it, nothing else.
