Banj; Thanks once again mate, your profound and insightful wisdom is always noted big fella:)) How is your trip going by the way? Take care...
Banker: Sorry to hear the bad news old mate, please take care out there in the jungle and try to keep your pants up before you see the doctor again mate. Peter is right about Cairns, and Darwin is even closer maybe; its easy for me to give advice, but I don't take my own all that often. I suppose we all have a "use by date", and I'm already 13 yrs past expiry, but truly hope you take care mate, Ok? As I've said privately to Banj on occasions; the board needs you, I need you and I am sure there's a little minx somewhere who needs you old mate. So please take care:)) Cheetal...
Terry: Wow mate, that was a real close call for you, and obviously your now well "past expiry" also; please take care! I was thrown back among the pidgeons 13 yrs ago; but its good to know the bastard dowstairs didn't want me then, or the old fella upstairs didn't need an advisor:)) Take care out there, Terry... Cheetal...

The best way to pay is to stay away from the private hospitals, like the Bangkok group. Pattaya/Bangkok quoted me 125,000B for Cataract surgery and at the top eye hospital Rutnin in Bangkok quoted me 50,000B. I am not all that worried because Banjo said he will pay my medical bills. ;D See he can be a nice bloke sometimes.

I was quoted the same prices for a cataract. Ended up having it done at a the big public hospital in Si Rasha about 20kms north of Pattaya. Total cost was just under 28,000 baht. I had the operation done on Monday afternoon, but had to checkin to the hospital on Sunday morning and out again noon on Tuesday. Had a private room and they even gave me western foods.

Hospital insurance is fairly expensive in Asia, and, of course, people on the DSP risk their residency if they take it out. I occasionally see "business travel insurance" at about $400 for a year but it's only for a set time away and I think older people don't qualify.
A grand isn't bad for a cataract though, you could borrow that off of Centrelink and have it done straight away rather than go on the public waiting list in Australia

The Navy Hospital in Sattahip was good. I went there for many years. I went there a month ago & they have signs up all over saying foreigners will pay at least 50% more than Thai's. They wanted 55,000B for the Cataract surgery. Attachments:

That sign says it all.
Thai's 50B and foreigners 200B, thats more than 50%. This is a government hospital gauging foreigners no wonder the private hospitals do it.

I was diagnosed with heart disease twenty years ago I also had v high blood pressure Seven years ago I had to leave work in korea as my ticker left vent was only pumping 40% Since then i have developed diabetes and nearly three years ago had a major cancerous tumour removed from my lower intestine I worked through most of this because i couldnt bear dealing with centrelink nor manage on dsp I now spend most of my time in Thailand on a reduced pension --reduced for the sin of marrying a 'dirty' foreigner Mt motto is 'to die on your feet is better then to live on your knees' But I would dearly love to slap a few arsehole from centrelink before I pass on but

...... And short term overseas visits during the two year reestablishment period is a separate topic which I will not comment on here.
..... I just turned 65 but have been living in the US so must go through the two year period you mention. I don't want to stop traveling . My questions: How long is considered "short term" travel? HOw often can I leave during the coming two years? I didn't work in the US, so I'm not eligible for a US social security check. but does my stay there count for anything? Thanks for any advice or comments from this community.

Welcome to the board Stever.
I think what you need to do is ring Centrelink and see what they say about your situation. Just being out of the country is enough to affect residency whether you were working or not.
If they say you're a non-resident then you have to return to Australia for the 2 year residency period before you can travel again on the OAP. If you disagree with the decision then ask for it to be reviewed. They will then appoint an Administrative Review Officer to go over the decision. At this stage you may wish to take professional advice so contact Welfare Rights in your home state.
