Ive been out of the country for a year now.. Staying in India... Im sooo homesick... I wish they made it possible to just go oversease for 3 months at a time like it used to be. I have schitzoprenia and hashimotos which gives me bad fatigue. I really dont think its a good idea to be travelling for such long periods of time...but i dont have a choice. Its either this or nothing.... I used to just go away for 5 months at a time every couple of years and it was perfect. I had enough time to save for a ticket and i could be home in Auatralia for as long as I liked. Now I can only be home for 5 months at a time and I have to go again... Im trying to be greatful but its just not fair.

I dont understand why you cant come home. Im guessing you are on the DSP with indefinite portability. You can go wherever you want and still receive your payment. Why do you think you have to stay in India now?, Do you think you need to be in Australia for 6 months of the year or you lose residency?. Im a bit confused about what your problem is. DSPers with Indefinite portability aren't subject to residency requirements of being in Australia for more than half the year. You can come and go as freely as you please, unless someone knows something i dont or you aren't telling the full story. Infact if you come back you will start getting more because your supplements will be reinstated and you'll get rent assistance.

Welcome to the forum kylaasha . Yes I'm somewhat confused by your situation as well. Hopefully we can offer you some moral support if you give us your full story, because from what you've said so far; "You're so homesick." And I'm not sure how being allowed to go for three or six months a year, every couple of years, is better than being able to go for a full year either. Cheers bear

Can't find a way to delete this post...basically...when I wrote this I was under the impression I could only stay back in the country for 5 months at a time(a friend told me that and I believed him.)...It was really giving me stress andwas grappling at how the government was gonna deal with this situation due to covid...but as it happens...I ve been back for a year and a half now and can't wait to get back to India to see my dog and go swimming in the Narmada...

I think I know what may be going on. Maybe your friend was what they called a 'Pre 1st Sept 1998 saved case' (grandfathered). This means that they were on DSP before 1st Sept 1998 and were classified as 'severely disabled' (20 points on one table) and were overseas on 1st Sept 1998. These 'saved cases' already had Unlimited Portability (could stay overseas as long as they wanted) and were 'grandfathered' (immune) from portability changes that came in on 1st of Sept 1998 until they came back to Australia for a period of 26 weeks or more (6 months). If they came back to Australia for more than 26 weeks, they lost their 'grandfathered' (immune) status and then the new potability rules applied to them. Originally that meant that they could only go overseas for 6 months, then a bit later it dropped to 3 months, then it dropped to 4 weeks (unless they applied for Unlimited Portability). I would say that your friend was one of these 'saved cases' and in his case, he would have to make sure he didn't spend more than 6 months in Australia because he would lose his Unlimited Portability and either have to just live with four weeks a year or run the risk of applying for Unlimited Portability and possibly triggering a review he may not have felt like he wanted to go through. Just a guess, although that would explain it. But it sounds like you've got it all set straight now anyway. Just out of interest, how long have you been making sure you haven't been back in Australia for more than 5 months for?

G'day krez I've sent a PM. However reading scuzzy 's response you may wish to disregard the question in the PM as he's provided good info which may help others and an explanation on why your friend probably told you what he did. Nowadays if you have UP you can come and go unhindered whenever and for however long you choose. We have members with UP who remain in Oz for substantial lengths of time building extra funds to go on long extended holidays fully paid, without any problems.
On the other side of the equation members haven't been back in decades and the worst that's happened is they've lost their Medicare enrollment after being away over five years. Cheers bear

My friend was overseas for about 10 years, Centrelink told her she had had lost her Medicare access. Centrelink and Medicare offices are now combined and all staff agreed. But she was put on the phone to Centrelink International while still at the office.
They disagreed with what she had been told and reinstated her Medicare over the phone. Less than 48 hours back in the country Medicare was reinstated. She was told only International can do that. Her card arrived the same week
This all happened very early February 2020.
