Hi all, Thank you for accepting my request to join.
I was granted DSP in 2021. My husband of 30 years is living overseas with a disability and I have an adult son and an adult daughter who is my Carer , planning to move overseas to be with their father in 2023. I have applied for the Indefinite portability in July and I have a JCA appointment tomorrow which I am very nervous about. I would appreciate any help or advice in a hopeful outcome. I am very afraid that if I am not granted IP, I will be left alone in Australia. I have no family living in Australia. Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the forum nazar . I trust your JCA goes well tomorrow. Now even though a carer can have six weeks portability, while the DSPer only has 28 days under normal provisions, the carer cannot apply for Indefinite Portability and will only be paid for six weeks unless going to an agreement country that covers CP. Therefore if your IP is approved, only you will be eligible for an ongoing permanent payment, except in the circumstances outlined in the links. Cheers 🐻 guides.dss.gov.au/social-security-guide/3/6/4/80"If you travel to an agreement country If you’re in a country with a social security agreement that includes Carer Payment, you may get it for more than 6 weeks.
How long you can get it and how much you’ll get depends on the agreement.
Read the rules for the agreement country you’re going to to see if you can get it.

Thank you for your response. I understand and accept my carer will not be paid past the 6 weeks. My concerns are when both my only family members (children) move to live overseas indefinitely and for some chance I am not granted the IP, that is what I am afraid of. Is there anything I should be doing or any forms I fill out?, or any other information I should give to CL. My GP and clinical Psychologist have filled out the medical forms, however both professionals ticked "Yes" to the question "Do you wish to provide a medical certificate on this report?"

Until the application process has completed, there's nothing you can really do nazar and having your medical professionals willing to provide a medical certificate can only be a plus IMO. If you are denied IP you can appeal the decision at the AAT. (Administrative Appeals Tribunal) Were you aware of the 20 points under one table, 0-2 hrs work capacity and the need for your condition to be ongoing for the next 5 years prior to applying?? Prior to applying, we would normally advise members seeking advice, to apply under FOI (Freedom of Information) for their file, to see how Centrelink has you assessed; so as you could see whether you'd be likely to qualify and/or where your application may have needed strengthening. Obtaining your file is free, can be done online at anytime, generally takes about one month and is something that would be recommended for you to do even with a successful application, because It gives you a chance to check for irregularities they may have on file regarding your disabilities. The Letter below may be used to apply for your file should you wish to do so. Cheers 🐻 BASIC FORM LETTER:Dear sir/madam, This email is a request under the FOI Act to obtain the files outlined below. My name is Mister Bear and my CRN No. is XXX XXX 246 M and I'm currently in receipt of the AP, OAP, DSP, DSP/UP. I have been in receipt of said payment since XX /03/ 20xx. I request all files held by Centrelink/Services Australia from xx/xx/xxxx (prior to your DSP application date) to the current date, relating to the application and determination of my current payment. I may be contacted on 0419 XXX XXX should you wish to clarify anything with myself regarding this application, as well as to advise the receipt of my application and an FOI/LEX Number that has been assigned; along with the name of my CSO. Kind regards Mr. Bear. Email address:- freedomofinformation@servicesaustralia.gov.au www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/organisations/about-us/access-information/freedom-information

Welcome nazar. Can I ask how long it took you in 2021 to get DSP? It seems that in recent years it takes a long long time. So if you got it fast I would guess that you will get IP. But only a guess in reality. Good luck.

Hi Nomadic, I applied in 2020 and It was rejected, I appealed through AAT, who advised me to get more medical evidence from Clinical Psychologist, I have been seeing a psychologist for 8 years however I was not aware I needed to see Clinical Psychologist. I reapplied in 2021 and approved 3 months after application. All my family are moving overseas for a better life hence the reason why I applied for IP. My husband of 30 years now lives in Europe for better medical care and closer to his ageing mother.

Please let us know how go as we like good stories.

Hi nazar,
Just my opinion, but I would always request my file via FOI when applying for IP. I'm a fairly recent DSP recipient (2015) and also, like you, appealed to AAT (mine was to AAT level 2). As the saying goes, you don't know what you don't know... but Centrelink do, and you can via FOI.
Also, while Carers Payment is 6 weeks portability, it does reset each time your carer returns to Australia if you have IP, and they can use any unused respite days to continue to be paid for a short while longer. Hope this helps.

Hi tasjo, Thank you for all the information. I have been granted IP which is fantastic news, however I wasn't sure how long it would take or how they would inform me. I waited for about 2 and a bit months and I phoned the Centrelink International number and I was told I had been approved. The CSO said that I will receive a letter in a week's time. I am still waiting I phoned this past Friday to be informed that they don't send letters out. A bit confusing and apparently I am meant to keep track and phone them to inquire. My process, I gathered all my medical reports from the past however long ago the more the better. All my doctors filled out the medical report forms. I wrote a letter of support about my daily tasks and issues and how this illness affects me daily, remembering to describe my worst days.I submitted everything double checking I have not missed anything so as not to delay my application. I sent it 29th June ,I had my JCA about 7 weeks after which I think went well. I was approved 7 weeks later.Again I will mention even at the time of JCA appointments describe your worst days. This site helped me immensely and I appreciate everything. Thank you... GOOD LUCK

Great news nazar!! I don't recall the thread nor poster, but essentially; a letter will only be generated when you advise of future travel. I've always advised through CIS and asked for the letter and a receipt. If you really must have a letter advise your going then don't, as the letter will arrive before your 'proposed' departure date. Cheers 🐻
