you buy it once and it will last forever instead of buying something not good and replacing it

Sounds good Banjo. I've gone right off HDD after my 2TB HDD 'carked' it and look out for SSD's now. What size screen does your laptop have please? Cheers Denis Sorry it's not an ASUS, it's an ACER Swift, 14". I've had it a while now. it's done an incredible amount of work for a little 256gb SDD/8gb RAM device, it runs all my streaming channels and downloads most of my stuff.

LOL Thank you for that information and I've 'googled' the model you have and it looks good gear. I don't use, nor have ever used a laptop, so I am appreciating the opinion of all you laptop users and I thank you one and all. Cheers Denis-NFAPS... How's the healing process coming along nomadic?

Ask bear if you want proof of how incompetent I am on all things other than basic stuff. No idea how to get an app even. Other than from a fruit shop. Only recently I learned how to post photos on Facebook. healing at about 5 to 10% per week so still a long way to go for 100%. Physio driving me crazy-er every day. Physio nerd maybe?

the more expensive you buy also means more security on your laptop

If that was a real concern we'd all own MacBooks with a 12-core CPU and 19-core GPU.
Apple MacBook Pro 2023 MPHE3 M2 Pro 512GB 14in
Manufacturer: Apple $2,877.00 - $3,829.00

My MacBook Pro went belly up after 12 years with the keychain password being compromised, I am going to get on You tube and see if there is someway to fix it.
In the meantime I started up my Windows computer but it is suffering a meltdown as well.
So I went to the local Mac dealer and the price of MacBooks and Mac Airs is not in my league.
I have been spoiled over the years with My MacBook Pro and can’t see myself going back to Windows machines.
So I will have to come up with plan B

the more expensive you buy also means more security on your laptop I disagree quantumrangerThe single most important criteria for security is the operating system. Having strong passwords for your online 'stuff' is also important. Having different email accounts for, say, financial websites, social websites and official websites like Centrelink spreads your online risk.

So I will have to come up with plan B onemore, and BanjomacBooks use the macOperatingSytem (macOS) which is a Unix/Linux based system adapted for their particular hardware. My Son has been an Apple/Macintosh fan for years, 20+, and has a current macBook and Iphone. I have used an Operating System called Linux for at least the last 10 years with Linux Mint my primary OS for at least the last 7 years. And I know you can install Linux Mint on any Microsoft computer and MacBook. How to Install Linux Mintand Linux Mint has a q&A forum - Linux Mint ForumsI don't recommend Linux Mint as such because there are others but it might be something worth thinking about onemore.

From my personal experience, I wouldn't buy a refurbished unit. Although I've never bought a factory refurbished laptop, I have bought two factory-refurbished high-end phones and both times there were problems, and both times I had trouble with the warranty. Another thing to consider is that if this laptop is for an 11 year old boy, he's going to be wanting to play games on it so you'll need to get something that has a decent graphics card and high enough processor speed so it can handle the fast moving images a game produces. The older he gets, the more graphics-intensive those games are going to get. If you just go into any computer shop, or even the computer section of a department store, the staff are usually very knowledgable and helpful and they can point you in the right direction, even if you don't buy from them there and then (but personally, anything like a phone or laptop/ computer I would buy from a store who you can go back to if there are any problems). Another consideration is whether he's going to be lugging it around or whether it's just going to be staying at home. If he's going to be carrying it around a lot, go for something trimmed-down and light. The difference between a 'heavy' laptop and a 'light' laptop can be about 1kg which doesn't sound much, but trust me, you feel that extra 1 kg every km you carry it.

Denis, bit late to the party, but 3 things with a laptop. Get at least 8gb ram, 500gb ssd (buy yourself if 2nd hand came with old style) and i7 if you can afford it, i5 if not. Good video chipset will help with windows. He's in y11, so maybe gets 3 years, then hands it on to you... Mint would run well on it. Microsoft hyping win11 compatibility, but I hate win 11.

Thank you for your thoughts scuzzy and good points you have made re refurbishment. My son, who is 16 and in year 11, has his own home desktop computer running win10 and is a mad keen gamer and has been since he was about 8yo when I bought him Mojang's Minecraft. He's since gone onto Steam and other games. I appreciate your pointing out the weight factor but by my reckoning I need to balance lightness with robustness with price as he'll be taking it in amongst other 'rowdy' young people. If it lasts longer than 5 years I'll be pleasantly surprised... lol His stated aim is to have a portable computer to take to school/university and bring it home and download to his desktop. I can't wait, and will buy him a licence, for him to work out the current version of Microsoft Office... lol Cheers scuzzy and thank you.

Thank you mikeyI hate win11 also... in a past life I used to be a Microsoft accredited whatever and they still send me emails giving advance operational access to their offerings. Agree 8gb ram and ssd... but I don't think he need 500gb ssd... I have a spare 480gb ssd if required but 240gb should suffice given he has his own desktop but I think AMD covers it. I'm hoping he can get 5 years and not 3 from it. Mint/Ubuntu/Debian will run on just about any/every personal computer/laptop these days. I appreciate your comments Denis-NFAPS I would never use a laptop... love my 10" no-name tablet with 512gb storage so I can read Banjo's Books. It's the second no name tablet I've bought at about AUD$100.
