I have a need to buy a laptop for my step-son (year 11) but have no real experience of using one. It doesn't need to be the latest and the greatest and more concerned about function and price and ability to connect to a desktop computer to transfer information back and forward. Last night I had a quick look at various refurbished Chromebook derivatives on Lazada for around 5k php (about AUD$150) but just checking with you 'mobile' folk and will appreciate any suggestions from 'the crew'. Cheers to all. Denis-NFA

A lot of the schools here use Chrome book Denis (our daughter uses a mac book but mostly to have the connectivity to iPhone etc).
Only downside I found with them was storage space.

I once considered buying a Chromebook when I was 'playing around' with Linux. Instead I decided to use Android phones/tablets for any online stuff. I've been happy with that decision over the last decade or so. Possibly a useful article:- www.cnet.com/tech/computing/chromebook-vs-laptop-whats-the-difference/My most recent purchase has been a Poco m5s phone. 8 GB ram, 256 GB storage + 256 SD card...... Although I was seriously considering this tablet.... s.lazada.co.th/s.PquqMWhat put me off was I wanted to experience a boost in ram above 4 GB which is the most any of my devices have had. The tablet can also double as a phone and price is Aud$ 150 approx. My two bobs worth Denis-NFA Cheers 🐻 P.S. I still have a Windows 10 based laptop which is happy to connect with my Android devices for transferring back & forth.

Thank you for your replies tasjo and bear. It is not that I am so much for Chromebooks as such - they just happened to come up first when I searched Lazada for laptops and after a quick look I thought they were okay and I've thrown it back to my step-son to do his research and come up with a laptop/s that will suit his requirements. bear - A few months back I bought another no-name android 12 tablet, the old one having gone to the bit bucket in the sky, which has a 10" screen, 8GB memory and 512GB storage just so I can read Banjo's books wherever... lol. If I wanted I could pair it with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and I would have a laptop!!!! lol... but I would need access to a WIFI spot to access google docs or microsoft's office 365. I run LinuxMint on my desktop with LibreOffice and had my step-son on it on his desktop but 9 years ago I bought a Minecraft license for him and he wanted Microsoft of which I had a registered copy of Win7 and we subsequently upgraded it for free to Win10. So whatever we get has to run Microsoft Office... lol. I know not much to very little about laptops and hence my request for as much info from your collective experiences as possible. tasjo, what was the storage space on offer in the chromebooks? bear, what is your win10 laptop configuration? Thank you Denis-NFA

The only advice I could add Denis is to look long and hard at local options first. I replaced my PC last year and spent months drooling over what was available to buy online, both price and quality-wise. I still bought locally because I wanted quick and easy access to service if something went wrong.
...and let's face it, if cars were as unreliable as computers we'd all own a push bike.

Agree BanjoWhat is your new PC configuration if you don't mind. My 10+ year old PC motherboard is still chugging along and I have added 16G memory and 2 SSD drives, 240GB and 480GB, and have a spare 480GB and same motherboard for just in case. The biggest factor here in Argao that wastes electronics is the power supply surges but the 2021 typhoon wiped out the then infrastructure so there has been a complete rebuild and, touch wood, it hasn't been too bad since (we had no electricity for 3+ months after that typhoon). ASUSTek actually have a manufacturing(?), assembly operation in the Philippines so I'm interested in them. Thank you for your thoughts.

Thanks for that bearYou gave me an avenue to start checking out and I appreciate your comments. Lazada currently have an ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 for 23k PHP (about AUD$670). But I'll look further at the refurbished list.

My advice don't buy chromebooks as they don't have many functions compared to a normal laptop Spend 800 dollars on a good one But I think if you want the feature of being able to touch your screen which is handy it would be an extra 400

ASUS is the choice for Banjo and bear and given they are assembled here in the Philippines I'm leaning that way myself. But still looking and researching. Thank you to all for the replies.
