For me this time of year reminds me that I have to be careful how much I give to my children for Christmas, as me being overseas I cannot just pop some cash into a envelope and hand it to them, especially as I am nearing the 10k threshold for the year.
I am also curious if the department relies on my honesty to notify them of my gifting to my children who are not doing so well financially during this time of year, do they have people checking our accounts, or does their computers do that job for them?
just curious.
Have a good one everyone.
Cheers, until next year.

Currently AFAIK onemore they haven't got any access neither human nor digital to check our bank accounts and think they rely solely on recipient's honesty to update their circumstances. However over in the UK they're currently looking into letting the DWP monitor the accounts of all recipients receiving certain payments, whereas currently they only monitor those who have been previously caught out or ones they are suspicious of. It's quite topical over there ATM and a search using these terms "dwp to check recipients bank accounts" throws up a litany of reading material. I'd say a slippery slope to full access eventually and a chance that in the future our government will feel the need to follow suit. See ya next year; Cheers 🐻

onemoreNot knowing your circumstances and given that you have already given gifts this year I would err on the side that they will know. I haven't read the fine print, nor am likely to do so, but don't forget the government has introduced for the banks the NPP, New Payment Platform which I am sure keeps track of every cent you take out of your bank account. You'd be better to pay them for doing some sort of "work" although they would have income tax considerations to think of or buy an expensive flower or book from them! Cheers

Ohh they do somehow check bank accounts (I think through tax department and bank reporting of withdrawals/deposits over 2k) and have done for quite a few years now...
I had a sum deposited into my account to pay some trades people for work for my mum and to go buy some things for her house she was renovating- a centerlink officer called me (not the run of the mill dopey front desk person either) to ask where the money came from and why it was put into my account. I then had to explain, have my mum talk to them and fill in some forms declaring what it was for etc. Now she has another card for an account I can access if she wants me to do things for her.
They are onto and more interested in deposits and withdrawals of larger amounts more than they care about smaller amounts- there is regularly money being sent back and forth between my mum, my kids and myself-
I am pretty sure they are more concerned about us recipients getting funds from elsewhere than they are about us spending our benefits. I was never asked about a similar amount that was withdrawn from my account but they were on the deposit so fast it was actually freaky.
