TWO female police officers are nursing broken fingers and bite wounds after allegedly being set upon by a 15-year-old girl who viciously assaulted them when they responded to a duress alarm at the Tamworth Centrelink office yesterday. Violance
The Quirindi girl is in custody, as is her 27-year-old stepfather, who was also allegedly involved in the altercation.
Tamworth Local Court magistrate Roger Prowse remanded them in custody, saying public safety outweighed their entitlement to bail.
The police officers – an acting sergeant and a constable – used capsicum spray to subdue the pair as a string of police reinforcements arrived at the White St building.
The trouble started about 9am when the man is alleged to have made threats to Centrelink staff.
In response, a duress alarm was activated and the two officers responded.
When the officers attempted to apprehend the man, it is alleged they were set upon by the girl who king-hit the acting sergeant and knocked her to the ground. Tamworth police said it was then that the girl pounced on the officer and bit into her little finger, which was subsequently broken.
The girl is also accused of biting the constable several times along her forearm and breaking the officer’s thumb.
It is also alleged the girl’s stepfather attempted to kick both the police officers.
An off-duty police officer who was nearby also provided assistance.
The injured officers were treated at Tamworth hospital and will undergo blood tests because of the bite wounds.
The officers could be sidelined from duty for several weeks.
“It is disappointing that these types of people behave this way in our community – with a total disregard for the role police play – and are prepared to significantly injure officers in the course of their duties,” Oxley Local Area Command duty officer, Inspector Jeff Budd, said.
Between them, the pair face charges including assaulting police, wounding a police officer while preventing an arrest and intimidation.
The man pleaded not guilty at his court appearance yesterday.
