UNEMPLOYED people who fail to turn up to appointments will be penalised much more harshly from July after the Gillard government quietly introduced legislation to increase the dollar amount of the penalty applied to jobseekers. The penalty, called a "reconnection failure", is currently one-14th of a person's fortnightly Centrelink payment. After July 1, the rate will be increased to a 10th of the fortnightly Centrelink payment. For a person in receipt of the Newstart Allowance of just $243 a week, this will mean the daily loss of income will increase by $7 a day, from $27 to $34. goo.gl/ybLO1

That's a dud link, Banker.
It is misleading to assess penalties like this. Everyone needs to pay rent and buy food. So to refer to 10% of a person's total income is to actually say a much larger amount when referring to what is left over after taking into account essentials.
This is a very mean-spirited and shameful move by the Gillard government. Particularly directed at such a vulnerable segment of the population....people who are right on the poverty line.

Your not going to get the full story, the Murdoch press now charges to read their papers online. Try to find the same story in the Age or the SMH or maybe one of the TV news site.
This is all you will get here.

I was talking to a mate on the OAP last week, he says his Filipina wife is on NewStart and has to apply for 10 jobs a fortnight. Mind you, she is already working part time so this is totally unrealistic. He mentioned that she rarely meets the requirements but no one seems to do anything about it.

Just another way to take from us, and give to the corrupt employment agencies, as a reward for depriving someone of their livelihood.
