Centrelink's system to check for administrative errors in making payments works well but could be improved, an audit has found.
The Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) report issued on Thursday says Centrelink should establish risk-based sampling rates for its system to be most effective.
This would mean working out which data-entry activities are most likely to have errors and double checking more of those.
The audit office also recommended Centrelink develop performance indicators to allow a national assessment of the quality checking system's effectiveness.
It said administrative responsibility for the system, known as Quality On Line, had been given to local supervisors which meant there was little monitoring at a national level.
"Capturing a longer time series of data to support trend analysis and analysing the feedback comments ... to identify training needs at the national level would be beneficial," the report states.
Centrelink told the audit office it was reviewing the quality checking system itself to see if it was as efficient and effective as it could be.
