If you are thinking about travelling outside Australia, Centrelink will be able to tell you if your payment can be paid to you and for how long. You may want to factor this information in to your decision about whether you travel or not. If you already have plans, then you must advise Centrelink. Centrelink will be able to tell you exactly how the absence will affect your payment, taking all your circumstances into account, and ensure that you receive the right amount while you are outside Australia. If you do not notify Centrelink, your payment may be stopped, and you will be required to pay back any amount that you have been overpaid. You must notify Centrelink before you go—it is a good idea if you do so about six weeks before your departure date, so you have all the information you need. If you need to leave in a hurry, make sure you tell Centrelink as soon as you can. www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/publications/int019.htm

Well i arrived very tired on Mon morn and got straight on the phone to the international free number i found on their website. It was a very unusual call. After explaining what had happened the girl simply asked for my CAN # and after a couple of basic questions like my return date , she said OK, have a nice time. She didnt ask me any security questions, re DOB or address or even my name , just my number and that was it. I was so taken aback and also jet lagged that i sat there stunned and realised i did not get her name or a call receipt number.
It was like i had just driven past her on the street and called out ,..." see ya when i get back " from my car, and she said ; " OK , have fun ". Most unlike the usual waiting for them to update the system and asking security questions and making you wait while they juggle your future in their hands. So much so i might use this method next time.......only kidding of course,......dont want to upset them .
So that left me with a lot of doubt as to whether this call was going to have the required result. But then this morning i got the usual email from them acknowledging my departure and stating what would happen if i failed to return after 13 weeks . So its all good for now,.........thanks for all your help . You were all very supportive and it was comforting to know this forum is here.
This is about my 10th trip OS in 7 years and just for the record i have never had a problem when i have called them to say i intend to travel. Although it does feel each time like im up against the Spanish inquisition and they could rule against me at any time. Which is why i ususally leave it till the last as my stress levels and fear of rejection go through the roof. I keep telling myself,.....I am entitled , i am entitled , like a mantra.
Thanks again,......its very hot here , lychee crops are starting to fail in 40 degree heat,.....just a little trivia for you.

Thanks indeed carvets, valuable information... can you vote on our poll please? Bad news about the lychees, a friend had her rinchee trees damaged by wild weather in the north of Thailand I've also been informed.
