Hi I am a newbie to this site and I have been reading about the portability changes (from 13 weeks to 6 weeks). I read that the proviso is that those with a "severe" and "permanent" disability are exempt. I am normally an Australian resident but have traveled overseas on the DSP for short periods. At some stage I wanted to go overseas to the US or UK for the 13 weeks previously allowed i have friends and family in both countries and thought a short-term thing of living somewhere else would be interesting. My question really is what does a severe and permanent disability mean in centrelink terms?

Welcome to the forum. Like most of the stuff we deal with it's a "how long is a piece of string" question. The severity of your disability will depend on your doctor's opinion and the opinion of the Centrelink officer handling you case. Look at all of your problems, physical and mental, and get them documented. When the time comes to inquire about the indefinite portability, and we have no idea how it will be done yet, then the people with the best paperwork will go through the quickest. Keep in touch with this forum as we have some good people here watching out for any new information that becomes public.
