IT was an $8000 fraud Simon John Waight said he didn't realise he had even committed. Between 2008 and 2009, the 29-year-old received money from Centrelink for a Newstart Allowance. In seven of the fortnightly forms he lodged to Centrelink, Waight did not declare all of his $23,000 income and received $8000 of tax-payers' money he wasn't entitled to. He pleaded guilty to the offence in Rockhampton Magistrates Court last week. Waight's solicitor said her client had been working sporadic hours on a casual rate when he was receiving the Government's Newstart Allowance. She said when Waight recorded his hours at the end of each fortnight he could only recall a rough estimate. But Magistrate Barry Cosgrove told Waight he did not find his excuse to be very convincing. Mr Cosgrove placed Waight on good behaviour for two years with a recognisance of $200. Waight has already paid $670 of the money back. He was also ordered to pay restitution of $7669. www.themorningbulletin.com.au/story/2012/05/14/plea-of-guilty-to-fraud-of-8000/

This is a complex problem with casual workers, it's their employers responsibility to see they get a fully documented payslip every week. But all Centrelink had to do was make him pay them back, instead they go to court, clog up the system and the guy has to pay for a lawyer on top of his other costs.
