Compared to minimal interventions, self-management has a small effect on pain and disability in non-specific low back pain (LBP), according to a review published online May 23 in Arthritis Care & Research. Vinicius C. Oliveira, of the University of Sydney in Australia, and associates conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature to investigate the effectiveness of self-management for non-specific LBP. Short-term (less than six months after randomization) and long-term (12 months or more after randomization) analyses were conducted separately. Based on data from 13 original trials, the researchers found moderate quality evidence that, in LBP, self-management was effective for improving pain and disability. At short-term follow-up, the weighted mean difference for pain was −3.2 points (on a 0 to 100 scale) and the weighted mean difference for disability was −2.3 points. The corresponding figures for long-term follow-up were −4.8 and −2.1 points. "There is moderate quality evidence that self-management has small effects on pain and disability in people with LBP," the authors write. "Although effective when compared to minimal intervention, we are unsure if self-management provides worthwhile effects in the management of LBP. These results challenge the endorsement of self-management in treatment guidelines." medicalxpress.com/news/2012-06-self-management-small-effect-pain.html

Ive read it 7 times and my LBP is still no better. Then i read it 2 more times and took a pain killer and i can now move. What is with LBP anyway , nothing on my X-Rays, doctor cant figure it out , physio does nought , so it just looks like ive gotta live with it and theres no way to fix it.

I have a spur on one of the lower vertebrae, it makes flying long distances difficult, anything over a couple of hours. I find anti-inflammatories help but my pharmacists complained about the amount my doctor was subscribing for me recently and warned of gastric problems. I've found massage can help even though it is painful at the time.

I have those on each of my big toes, makes walking painful, AI often, but i try to keep walking to a minimum. And yes when i get foot massages here i always have to tell them to go easy round the big toe area. I wouldnt like to have one on my Lower back , that would be uncomfortable. Surgery may be an option . For me anyway.

Not really sure, I suspect it was cause by impact trauma in a fall which was ignored as I badly broke my leg at the same time. Other than that it was from leaning to far back when lifting.

Bite your tongue Bedwin, I have gout and there's nothing old about me!!!! lol Gout is actually caused by uric acid crystals forming in the joints. It's one of the most painful things you can experience. On the plus side I've only had one attack since I gave up serious drinking.

There is no swelling or redness which can come with Gout . No sign of Uric acid in the blood tests . Redardless , its painful .
