AS part of the Spanner in the Works? men's health initiative, Australian Hearing is partnering with Men's Sheds across the country to put the spotlight on hearing health.
Coinciding with Men's Health Week (June11-17), Spanner in the Works? gives local Men's Sheds the opportunity to provide health screening tests and advice in a male-friendly environment.
To support the program, Australian Hearing Cleveland is offering free hearing checks and promoting hearing health awareness at the Bay Islands Men's Shed event on Tuesday, June 12.
Area Manager of Australian Hearing Cleveland, Kristina Bohdal, said that around 60 per cent of people over 60 suffered from a hearing loss.
"Men also have a higher incidence of hearing loss than women, particularly older men, mainly due to noise exposure in the workplace and during war service," Ms Bohdal said.
She said simple things, such as turning up the TV or having difficulty following conversations in noisy places, are often the early warning signs.
"If you are concerned about your hearing, a simple 15 minute hearing check is the first step you should take."
Australian Hearing Cleveland representatives will be available at the Bay Islands Men's Shed event at the Community Centre on Macleay Island on Tuesday, June 12, to conduct free hearing checks and to discuss hearing related issues on a one-to-one basis.
No appointment is necessary, hearing checks will be provided to anyone who attends the Men's Shed event.
Australian Hearing provides subsidised hearing care for eligible people, including pensioners and most veterans. For more information, visit www.hearing.com.au or phone 131 797.
