I received an email from a pensioner today telling me that Centrelink no longer require travelers to tell them when they return, as "they have a direct link to immigration". Any one else heard this?

I have a friend on the DSP who was advised the exact same thing about 6 weeks ago when departing Oz and notifying Centrelink. He was told no need to tell us when you are back.

Funny, my favorite Centrelink International officer who insisted on checking me out personally gave me explicit instructions to call in when I got back.

If thats the case then surely there's no need to tell them when your leaving either.

I suppose it's easier to watch a few thousand overseas than nearly a million in Australia on the off chance they may go. I dare say there's one or two here with a big red flag next to their name on the computers of several government departments though. Just look at it, the people who were investigated and decided to stay in Australia like myself and rodcourt with no record of doing the wrong thing (as seen by Centrelink) would still be on their Big Brother list.

I was late back by a few days when Bangkok airport was under siege , and i didnt contact them and they cut me off quick smart,......come back on or before due date , no contact with them and life goes on . If you tell them when your leaving i imagine your flagged and the system will hunt you down on your return date ,.....back in time, no problem,...late and they'll make you suffer till you beg for their mercy . They know !!! I think ive seen too many spy movies.

I believe the Centrelink website still states that we must inform them, at least when we are leaving. It's probably best to play safe and phone them coming both in and out of the country, until there is a public statement to the contrary.

I never had any doubt that CL and immigration are linked. Actually I'd be surprised if they weren't I have to agree with latindancer, best to call them, so they can't come back later and tell you that you didn't advise them.

I know people get away with not informing them at all so it supports my theory that they cannot check all of us everyday. I'm sure that anyone with no travel history with them could leave and return unobserved.... don't hold me to this, I'm just thinking out loud... while someone with ANY sort of history at all has no hope. It's all about profiling which is a growth industry these days.

I believe this to be true,....as i know someone who has traveled every year for the last 10 years , has never told CL and its never been raised by CL. Makes me wish i had never told them i was going on my first trip. Still i think its a lottery and you get randomly checked.

And if you get caught you have to pay back all that money they paid you while you were away.

I agree, when I applied I went straight back to thailand and stayed in contact by phone and never told them I was here and they never asked. Im guessing you could fall off the radar if you lay low. However this is of course illegal

One time in the 90's during a stint on Newstart I left the country briefly without telling them (only because I didn't realise I had to). They were onto it straight away and cut me off (and that was the the 90's!) Then a few years ago whilst on DSP, I rang and told them my departure date. However, a couple of hours later the airline contacted me and told me the flight had been cancelled and I'd be flying the next day instead. I forgot to tell Centrelink that I was leaving a day later than I'd told them, but they sent me a letter indicating that they had recorded the day I actually left, not the date I originally told them. So they know.
