I heard an unusual story today where a grandfathered DSP recipient was automatically placed on the OAP at 65 which was then stopped until he applied for a Thai pension, as Centrelink were aware that he had worked in Thailand (he had informed them) while on the DSP. The only reason I can think of for this is so any income from a Thai pension could be deducted from his OAP.

When I applied for the OAP in Australia as a returning non resident, in parallel with my application Centrelink prepared the forms for me to sign so they could make an application to the Philippines Social Security System. I had no problem signing and just thought..................good luck with that. But it is probably standard procedure because if they do it with everyone who applies for OAP they might score lucky with a few first world countries, but for the third world ones, they are whistling in the wind. To stop the processing of an OAP application might seem a bit rough, but if one has an entitlement elsewhere to an OAP then Centrelnk has the right to know about that. But in Thailand, Centrelink should know by now that a foreignor in Thailand will get nought from the Thai Government except bills to pay.

I believe the pension was reinstated until the investigation was completed, which shows some sanity prevailed. Full marks to the chap for telling Centrelink he did a bit of work in Thailand. Seriously, it shows that Centrelink divides people into two groups... crooks and crooks they haven't caught yet.
