JETSTAR'S first-mover advantage from the Boeing 787 Dreamliner looks set to be short-lived after Singaporean rival Scoot announced last night it would acquire 20 of the fuel efficient planes from 2014.
The 787-9s planes will replace Scoot’s Boeing 777-200s as part of its ongoing expansion. The airline said the aircraft would sport a new interior in addition to the 787’s bigger windows and higher cabin pressure.
The order comes as Singapore Airlines announced it was ordering another five Airbus A380 superjumbos and 20 A350-900s from European plane-maker Airbus.
The latest A380 order will be the third to be placed by the airline, bringing the total number of A380s ordered by SIA to 24. It currently has 19 aircraft in service, flying from Singapore to 10 destinations in Europe, the US and the Asia-Pacific region, including Sydney and Melbourne.
The orders contrast with Qantas’s moves to throttle back widebody aircraft deliveries until its ailing international operation makes an acceptable return on capital.
...The Australian carrier has put back delivery of Boeing 787-9s until 2016 but smaller 787-8s are due to start arriving at Jetstar in the second half of next year. Qantas has steadfastly denied suggestions the aircraft will be re-routed to its mainline operations, where it has indicated it could fly Dreamliners to Europe with proposed alliance partner Emirates.
Scoot’s 787-9s will be bigger than the Jetstar planes, allowing it to carry more than 300 passengers, but it has yet to decide on engines.
Scoot chief executive Campbell Wilson said the 787 announcement was exciting news and “not least because the aircraft’s fuel efficiency will help keep ticket prices low.”
