Hi Team.. A question thats causing me all sorts of confusion and anxiety before I buy my ticket to the Phillipines; can someone advise me please? I want to travel to my woman there and I dont really want to buy a return ticket, I was planning on applying for extended stays/visas as necessary; but am not sure if I need a return ticket? It seems many people do it this way, but I dont wanna get caught out! After I know the ropes I wanna apply for the Alien Registration Card; there are so many things to know and pencil in before leaving, its doing my head in bigtime! I have been advised of Leo at Swagman Travel, but I'd rather ask the board first? What are your thoughts please, any tips Banjo and Banker? Later Team:))

I think Swagman would have the experience behind them. I might move this to the travel section mate.

Im out of the loop so far as the Philippines as I haven't been there for 10 years.
What I did when traveling to PI for long stays was buy an open one year return ticket. They cost more but you can move your return dates around and get a refund on a cancellation.
Going to PI on a one way ticket can be a bit iffy, sometimes the airline wont let you board on a one way ticket. This has been my experience in the past.

If you are flying with jetstar they will not even let you board the plane if you don`t have a return flight or a flight booked to fly out of the Philippines. Four weeks ago i had to purchase a ticket from Manila to Singapore at Darwin airport just to be able to board the plane.

Its a problem. If one intends to stay there say for a year, then how does one have the insurance of an onward ticket?
If one is going by Jetstar out of Darwin, which is good value, then its pointless to purchase an onward Jetstar ticket since their tickets are non refundable and non transferable.
Perhaps purchase the ticket Manila to Singapore, on another airline as an open ticket and claim a refund at a later date?
How hassle free would that be?

Presumably, if one holds an Identity Card with a Permanent Resident Visa then one would be exempt from the onward ticket requirement.
Cheetal does not hold such a visa.
I am wary about Manila port of entry as things can become difficult if immigration officials spot a mark.........that is someone whose papers are not in order.
Perhaps things have changed, but its better to be sure than sorry. Quite a few years ago, I flew Hong Kong to Manila without an onward ticket, and they would not let me out of the arrivals hall until I bought such a ticket. The problem then was that no tickets were for sale in the arrivals hall. Luckily, I had access to a phone and called a contact who arrived with an onward ticket bought outside.
I was lucky. There were some Brazil people there who had been there for some days, as they had no contact outside, and little english to tell the world their problem.
Not worth the risk of being vulnerable.

I was told last week by friend that he received an automatic 12 month easily renewable visa on arrival when his Filipina wife produced their marriage certificate.

I had a mate who flew to the Philippines last month from Bangkok. He was flying with Tiger and was not allowed to checkin unless he had a return ticket. I had to book his return ticket because he couldn't buy one at the airport. Once I booked and paid for his ticket with Tiger, I thought they could check it on their computers. NO, I had to email the ticket to an internet cafe upstairs in the airport. There is even a bit written on the Tiger Airways website. Just check under flights on the home page.

I fly in and out of Manila all the time, You do need an onward ticket within 21 days to be able to present to the airline before they will check you in. I have heard of people just making a photoshop copy. In regards to the ACR-I card you can only get that when you renew your visa waiver at immigration the second time so depending on how long you will stay there it would be quite difficult to obtain one next year once you can only stay overseas for 6 weeks at a time.
21 days at airport. 38 days first extenision 3,030 pesos. 59 days second extension 4,300.00 pesos plus $50USD I-Card plus 500 pesos express fee for I-Card.

If your going to be doing multipe trips to the Philippines each year I suggest that you get a 1 year multi entry visa for $162 at a Philippines embassy in Australia also saves you time going to immigration while overseas to renew.
If you do 4 trips a year your looking at 12,120/ $285 so you would save about $123 a year even more if you do more then 4 trips a year.

When you arrive at Manila airport you can purchase your visa extension there. When you go through immigration ask for visa extension and the office is 5 metres to the left. It will cost you 2700 pesos.
