Centrelink staff nationwide will join with local community organisations to celebrate International Day of People with Disability (3 December).
Centrelink staff from Area Sydney East will be hosting a free barbecue with entertainment and presenting certificates of appreciation to disability service providers and customers.
The event, held in partnership with the Burwood City Council and NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care (DADHC), is at the Burwood Centrelink Customer Service Centre on 4 December.
Centrelink Area Sydney East manager, Alison Frame said the event was a good opportunity to thank disability service providers for their work, as well as highlight the support available for people with a disability and particularly Indigenous customers.
Aboriginal Elder, Barbara Keeley from La Perouse will be there with other VIPs such as Federal Member for Lowe John Murphy MP, Lord Mayor of Burwood John Sidoti, representatives from Vision Australia and DADHC as well as the Rev. Bill Crews.
After certificates are given to outstanding disability service providers and customers, there will be a public event from 11 am until 1 pm with a free barbecue and music by students from Eora TAFE, plus information stalls and self-service demonstrations.
"We’re doing this to support people living with a disability, and to recognise the efforts of local service providers," said Alison, who will be speaking on the day.
"It’s all about raising community awareness of people with disability and the support networks that are available for them.
"With 1 in 5 Australians affected, it's important we acknowledge the contributions made to our community by people with a disability," said Alison.
"Centrelink provides support, information and referral to those living with a disability, and helps job seekers with a disability to find employment, training and rehabilitation.
"I urge anyone interested in finding out more to visit their nearest Centrelink office, refer to the Illness or disability[1] section or call 13 2717."
