Relative cost of living, dealt with in another thread today, can also be estimated by the difference between the one way fares at the bottom of Banker's link. $41 Bali to Perth/$169 Perth to Bali. As soon as you are out of Oz you have travel freedom at a third the cost. Airplane fuel all costs the same, everywhere.

As one who remembers the days when Qantas and Ansett ruled the Australian airways and controlled prices with a ruthlessness that is now difficult to believe I think we something to be thankful for.

Just like a lot of other BULLSHIT in Australia extra charges for this and that extra departure tax is just one.

Yep very true. Once you fly out of oz it's like removing an octopuses tentacles out of your pocket.

I'm still waiting for that ferry from Darwin to Timor, that would really set the cat among the pigeons. What would the equivalent distance be? Manila to Mindanao? Certainly possible.

That's what you get for thinking your kids can run the business.

Wonderful metaphor howdo, for the nanny taxed-to-death property driven state Oz has become, the octopus. Blame the States, not just the Fed. When you think of what Banjo is saying about a ferry or milk run from Darwin to Timor, or Cairns to Papua, you have to think there is some kind of paranoia about those in Bliss Prison Farm being freed up to go over any border. The Boat People are not as trapped as the Australians. In fact, all that BS about Melanesian culture in the Torres Strait, the local island governments, the trusts, in a way just prevents Australians from island skipping to to foreign land. This is very weird when you start thinking about it.

I should have added that aside from traversing the south pole, there is only one other way on wings to get out of Bliss Prison Farm. Perth to Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands. There is currently a service to KL. Bingo. Ridiculously expensive of course. But us disgruntled DSPers could probably buy the Cocos collectively, despite the fact the Yanks want it as their drone base for the Indian Ocean. It is ironic indeed that the way in for the Boat People, is our way out when you think about it.
