I spent about a year in Vientiane off and on around 2001/02. I liked Luang Prabang but it was a bit too quiet for me in those days.

LP is backpacker heaven these days best to avoid it, I do prefer small quiet towns where its dirt cheap to live..though I end up living like a local, it beats living here in poverty and better for my mental health..

My son, mid-30s, lives in Siem Reap, but just spent some time in Luang Prabang, and from a cultural heritage standpoint, etc., he loved it. But I take takeo's point, particularly for us "oldies", namely that one wants to live cheaply without being surrounded by young yobs. Sometimes it is just a subtle shift in geographic position, adjacent to . . . like Banker's ruse. Sometimes, I found the older cliche developed spots, now avoided by the backpackers because they are "commercial" are in fact better and quieter. Dead end flight routes are often the sign of trash tourism, like Phuket has gone to the dogs a bit.

I got on OK with the kids, they were always intrigued by what a dinosaur like myself was doing in places like Bagio, VangVien and MaiHongSong.
As I was inevitably enjoying myself a few even re-thought their philosophies on aging.
As one said in a Savanakhet guest house "My God, you're a happy man!", like happiness shouldn't occur in the over 50s.

Mate, ring Centrelink and ask them.
Then if you're still not satisfied ring Welfare Rights in your home state. No good worrying about it while you're away, I've had too many years of that bullshit myself.
