Hi from Sydney Australia My husband and i wil retire in a couple of years and we are looking at retirement in overseas. we believe that at that time my husband will be unable to work and would be entitled to the D.S.Pension . our question is does anyone know if the pension is portable to an agreement country as my husband is irish and has lived in OZ for 25yrs and we are thinking of making ireland our l retirement base but spending the majority of our time travelling. Does anyone know of someone who has tried to do this. Our view is we both have worked between 50yrs in OZ and believe that we are entitled to a pension . i will retire and look after my husband . As for retiring in Australia we know we just couldn't afford it we would also like to know if you are in an agreement country like ireland can you travel outside of the country without time limits that affect your pension whether it be D.SP or Aged Pension look forward to hearing from you regards Des& Kelly

I think new DSP recipients will be subject to different rules to what many of us are currently affected by. Napper needs to discuss this with Centrelink, I have here a list of countries that have a portability agreement with Australia. * Austria * Belgium * Canada * Chile * Croatia * Cyprus * Denmark * Finland * Germany * Greece * Republic of Ireland * Italy * Japan * Republic of Korea * Malta * the Netherlands * New Zealand * Norway * Poland * Portugal * Slovenia * Spain * Switzerland * United States of America (USA) And this is what they say on payments How much pension do I get paid under an agreement
Everyone's circumstances are different and it is not possible to advise the amount that you will receive. However, apart from being affected by your income and assets, the following special rules also apply to these payments. * Each country usually pays you a part pension. * Foreign pension rates are usually proportional to the length of your social insurance period. * Australian pensions are usually paid at a proportional rate outside Australia, and as top up pension inside Australia (i.e. any pension you receive from the country whose agreement you are being paid will generally reduce your Australian pension dollar for dollar). * For the Australian pension, some foreign welfare payments are not treated as income. * Some agreements allow special treatment of certain pensions paid by that country's social insurance fund. How do I claim an Australian pension while outside AustraliaIf you are living in an agreement country, you can claim an Australian pension by: * visiting the relevant offices of the social security authority in any agreement country * telephoning Centrelink International Services on our International numbers[13], or * downloading our International claim forms[14]. You cannot claim an Australian pension unless you are residing in Australia OR an agreement country. Note: If you are claiming certain Australian payments, including Age Pension[6], you (and your partner if applicable) must take steps to get a pension from the country you lived in, or provide a reason why a claim would be unsuccessful. www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/international/pension_agreements.htm#agreementsA phone call to Welfare Rights in your state capital would be more enlightening.

my understanding is that you could live in the countries listed above. At the moment, most of the agreements include a section on portability. Generally, the rules are the same as the agreement country ie Australia. As you'll see from this board, until now, that means up to 13 weeks in a non agreement country. Just how that might change under the new rules I am not sure. The media releases say that the new rules won't affect those under international agreements. Phone Hobart +613 6222 3455 or the 1300 in the book. mind you, this current situation shows that just because you get told one thing now, there's nothing to stop the Govt changing the rules !
