Due to the rule stating you must have 6 months remaining on your passport before entering some Asian countries. Does that mean any visa's still current in your passport are lost?

I was under the impression that you kept your old passport with the visa in it howdo. Then when you entered the country or got the visa extended you just presented both passports. It would be a good idea to point this out to the Aussie embassy/immigration when you renew your passport so they give you back the old one. I always get mine back, they just cut the barcode off it.
Banker will have more idea than me, I'd imagine he's renewed passports with visas in them on more than one occasion.

It depends on the Country the visa is for.
In Cambodia you must keep your old passport with the visa in it and show that and the new Passport until that visa expires..
IN Thailand...Take both old and new P.P to Thai Immigration and they will just transfer the visa into the new P.P.
Philippines....I cant remember too long ago.

Okay cheers for all replies guys. Having a bit of a travel round and when I get back to Asia my passport will be 2 weeks inside the stated 6 months. I was wondering weather to renew or take the chance, seems a shame to lose so many months off the passport. Bang on re - the bloody big stamp taking up a whole page.

Personally I wouldn't take the risk mate, it's purely the way I do things though... before entering any country make sure the t's are crossed and the i's dotted. Having said that, I've never had a passport time out in recent decades, they always run out of pages.

I renewed my passport in Bangkok a month ago. It is very easy, more so than in Australia as I don't live in a city. I only had a land border entry stamp in the old passport, and when I flew out of Bangkok, I just had to show the stamp in the old passport, and they stamped my exit in the new one. 1960.

anthonydspThank you. I have never known for sure. PS. I have a bit of paper from Centrelink that tells me that whilst I am out of Australia that I will be paid DSP indefinitely. The confirmation letter from Centrelink is signed by someone called - XXXXXXXX whose job title is 'Customer Service Adviser Department of Human Services'.
