Hi my name is Bex and I'm a dual U.S & Australian citizen. I'm currently on DSP. There are so many cheap homes in the USA and was wondering whether it was possible to buy over there and live on the dsp etc whilst also being safe? Is it possible to buy somewhere in the USA with DSP money? What's with 13 weeks? Am I just dreaming?

Welcome to the forum Bex.
I wouldn't advise owning a home in the US unless you are covered under the International Agreement. Centrelink would use this to declare you a non-resident.
We have a moderator here with ties to the US who may have some advice for you, aussieinusa.
Not sure what you mean about 13 weeks, if you are referring to overseas portability it's now 6 weeks.

They don't shoot you, they cut your pension off and you starve to death. I don't think it's about how much you pay for a house overseas it's convincing them that you don't live in it. Unfortunately Centrelink has no "innocent until proven guilty" policy. They cut you off then you have to prove they are wrong. If you buy an overseas property you want to keep your ties to Australia solid, a home, friends, family and watch the time spent away. Not more than 6 months a year seems to be the word at the moment.

Well, yeah i have friends and family.. so.. i just want it as like a holiday house really. and because yeah its cheaper.
i just remember how traumatic it was to get the DSP -.- I have ADD, depression and arthritis - yet they still thought I could work!?!? I'm like hello.. i'm a bit stressed from working when I can't walk on most days blabhblahblah. anyways i better not complain to much because i think im in for a culture shock with the medical system in the US.
do you think my concept to go to the US to live is strange?? the only thing cutting at my belt really is the plane ticket. ouch.
is it better to buy a place when you're overseas or when you're here? but if people got kicked outta their house might they be upset that im now living in it and pull pranks on me during halloween..?
i told my mum and she's like you want to go to america and you still havent paid me back the 20 dollars you owe me. lol.

CD. More information about your case please. I was married to American, also worked about 14 years in the USA, so I'm already drawing SS @ around the minimum rate, plus a child allowance. I get $304 exempted by Centrelink and after that they will be deducting about 50% of $500 from my OAP. But that's another story. You are saying you are a US Citizen. What work credits do you have in the USA? Buying a condo in a place like Florida or Nth Texas might be an option. But travel costs are going to cripple you. Have you actually scoped this out vs buying a condo in Thailand, Philippines, even Sri Lanka, NZ? I'm guessing you are not really ready to buy, you just need advice. Most YMCA's across the USA give cheap temporary accom to people like yourself. And they are in most cities.
