Hi guys,
I'm 66yo Aussie living in LOS on DSP. I'm grandfathered under old rules so have full portability. When I turned 65 Centrelink asked me if I wanted to go on age pension or remain on DSP. I discussed it with them and as there didn't seem any difference I said I'll stay on DSP. I do not receive a full pension as due to my working life in Oz I'm only eligible to 87% of the full pension. I also have some further deduction made from my pension as I receive income from my flat in Oz that is rented out by a property manager when I'm in LOS. I'm single and receive the single rate pension. My last pension payment was $1,325.60 for one month.
Now I'm considering marrying my Thai GF. But before going too far down this path I need to know what effects marriage would have on my pension payments and if I can even afford to marry. The lady I would like to marry is a Thai citizen, never been to Oz, she doesn't own property and has maybe a few thousand THB in the bank. I support her so she has no income.
I believe if I was to marry Centrelink will change my pension rate from single to married which would result in a lower monthly payment. But how much lower should I expect?

Welcome to the forum.
At 66 I'm surprised you want to marry so young.
Centrelink would certainly consider putting you on half the married rate, 87% of about $1132 a month... about $987.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, that was about what I expected to learn, knock my payments down by around 30%, in other words make it impossible for me to afford to marry. I'm getting by OK at the present time on my pension and the additional income I make from property rental but a drop of approx. 12,000 THB a month is out of the question.
No, I'm not considering taking her to live in Oz, I can't afford to live there, I get way better mileage out my pension here in LOS. I have full portability and that is a grand thing to have these days, so I only make short trips once a year to visit family for a few weeks then back to LOS. I am planning on taking my TGF on my next trip in the new year, just a 3-month visitor visa.
