I was honoured to have been invited to the above launch of Australian Pensioners Voice (former Senior Action Group) and the opening of their new premises.
Moreland City Council has enjoyed a positive relationship with the Moreland Seniors Action Group and we continue to be supportive of their work under their new name of Australian Pensioners Voice. The group’s purpose is to lobby all levels of Government on matters affecting older people, especially those who receive an aged pension. The Council may not always agree with all their policy positions, however we are always respectful of their voice, because it opens up real debate on issues raised by and affecting aged pensioners. I personally congratulate them for making sure the voice of seniors is heard locally, state-wide and hopefully now nationwide. Council has supported the group by encouraging them with community grants for establishment costs and to run information sessions for seniors in Moreland. Councillors Lambros Tapinos, Michael Teti and Stella Kariofyllidis showed their support by attending a large public event for the group at the Coburg Town Hall in November 2009.
Council has adopted a Later Years Strategy that outlines our commitment to making Moreland a better place in which to grow older. It is important to note that most older people do not require any aged-care support to live independently in our community. However, for those who do need support Moreland City Council provides Aged and Disability Services to 4,500 people including home care, personal care, respite care, home maintenance, delivered meals and Community transport.
